My old lad has developed a swollen sheath in the last week or so, it's about twice the size as usual, is not hot and there is not immediete sign of infection/injury.

He is retired, and his routine/feed/turnout hasn't altered at all, and it doesn't seem dirty so I'm at a loss as to what has caused it. He doesn't seem to be in any discomfort either, but as he's old (19, but has been accident prone so this has aged him somewhat), i'm worried about what could have caused this.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated, and yes I will certainly get the vet if there is no simple solution i have overlooked! :)

My old gelding had a similar swelling and at first I couldn't see anything wrong but after a week I did some further investigation and found that there was a lump in the wall of the sheath - you could feel it but not see it. Unfortunately, because it didn't seem like it bothered him I gave it a rather hard squeeze and he nearly went thru the roof. It must have burst whatever was there because after that it cleared up really quickly.

Hope you get it sorted soon, good luck.
