Hi all. My 19 year old gelding has quite a swollen sheath at the moment. He does get this most summers due to fly bites, but usually it calms down with a quick slap on of Midge Off. This year it isn't going away - we've cleaned his sheath out (it was pretty yucky) and put the cream on again but it's still swollen. It's not giving him any discomfort and he is peeing freely. The swelling is soft and fluidy, and there is no heat. He was lame last week having done something to himself in the field, but is pretty much sound now. He's not in work at present, and is living out for now.

Has anyone had this happen to their gelding? What was the outcome? Any tips on getting the swelling down?

At his age, id be thinking along the lines of cushings disease tbh. One of my mares' (also 19 years) only symptoms was swollen mammary tissue- i had her tested and it came back positive. Geldings can display swelling around their bits too. Saying that though, Im sure your boy is fine. i have no such luck!!

In almost 10 years of having my boy, he has had a swollen sheath twice.

The first time, he had an infection and needed antibiotics to clear it.

The second time it turns out he had a load of maggots hatching up there! I would think that this is more likely because of the warm weather.

If I were you, I would keep cleaning it out but use just hot water - hibiscrub will kill all the good as well as the bad bacteria. If it doesn't go down after 2-3 days, personally, I would take mine to the vet.
