Just wondering if anyone has come across a swollen sheath on one side only ???
My boy is 18 years old and has had sacoids on his sheath 3 times in 5 years.

I noticed about a month ago that one side of his sheath is really swollen, had the vet but she could not find any reason or problem with it. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and what they did to bring the swelling down.

Many Thanks

one of my geldings has the same my vet can't find anything either, it is slowly getting bigger so he thinks that there is a problem with the blood supply to this area a blockage of same type and he will have to undergo further investigation in the near future. let me know what happens with your boy.

Mine had the same thing! Blood tests and everything done but the vet just couldnt find anything apart from a slightly lower than average white blood cell count but nothing abnormal! Does it go down with exercise and turn out?? I changed my boys feed and touch wood he hasn't had it again! It can apparently be due to lack of protein in the diet.

It doesnt seem to go down with exercise or turn out, one side is normal and the other is really swollen but doesnt seem to be bothering him. Spoken to the vet today who wants me to clean his sheath, get some weight off him and give him a high protein diet as you suggested. If this doesn't work he is gonna need blood tests done to check it isnt anything to do with his heart or kidneys :(. What diet did you use to give your horse ???

Many thanks

I have tried the sheath cleaning and the high prtoein made no difference to my boy he is also out 24/7, we are now thinking old field/polo injury ie splits or direct hit from a ball that has affected the lymphatic drainage

I see  My boys was quite sore. I held as warm as he and I could take wet towl on the sheeth and it went down with that aswell. The vet cleaned him and got some lumps of like calcium out! They looked like cotton wall balls.
He was on Low Cal but now on Baileys top line cubes and Outshine and no prob. I recon this could be a dietry thing. What do you feed him?

He is only on a cool mix as he is a very good doer and gets overweight really quickly .. Cleaned his sheath today and spoke to baileys horse feed who have recommended I put him on their low cal balancer diet and see if that makes any difference to him ....
