PLEASE EXCUSE ALL SPELLING MISTAKES KEYBOARD NOT WORKING

my 5year old trotterX has come up with a swollen lump above his coronet band on the inside if his left hind leg about the size of a ping pong ball quite hard and has some very small deep yellow crusty scabs on the lump (pin head size) further up his leg there are some black spots (pin head size) which are dead skin coming off. We first noticed the swelling last week - it came up suddenly in the wind - and it hasnt gone down at all. Has anyone had experience of this ? Could it be mud fever even though no mud in his field but very sandy soil?
