sycamore trees

Hi, in nov 2013 my horse unfortunately had sycamore poisoning, it was the worst thing i've ever seen, my poor boy was dying in front of us! BUT he is still here, he fought and with round the clock care from us and our vet then 8 days in equine hospital on a drip he pulled through! he came home and now over a year after is clear from all the other affects it has, i did move yard though as i wouldn't risk it, we had over 100 trees surrounding our field. Vets discharge papers said strictly never to return to previous grazing.
Anyway yes its right they still don't no enough about it but they do know its autumn and spring, seeds and saplings it appears to be, so avoid if poss or vigorously check your fields regularly.

A kg of seeds is an awful lot for the testing. Maybe it's that many to make sure they get enough to cover the fact that some will have it and others won't.

It is a lot of seeds as you say 1kg ! and you have to make sure you get them from the whole tree BUT there are many types of sycomores and some just don't produce any Hyp A. which was the case (luckily) with the neighbors tree.

If there is any Hyp.A found in seeds or leaves it is true that production can vary with age and seasons, but some just dont have the capacity to make this poison

There seemed to be so many cases last year in places where there had never been a problem before that I expect trees that were not poisonous before became poisonous for some unknown reason so any sycamore may become problematic.

I was on a yard last year where sadly there was a case and there had never been one before and the land had been grazed for many years and grass was plentiful however I do think there seemed more seeds last year than in previous years.

Very true, but it is only since the last few years we know there is a connection to sycamores. Earlier a sudden death of a horse may have been diagnosed as heartfailure or colic.

And then there are climate changes (or cycles) why we suddenly have bouts of westnile fever in Europe and ticks that carry lyme disease further north then france......too many hot autumns and warm winters.
