Symptom of colic???

When my friend's horse colicked the vet told us that a good way to check in the future was to take their pulse. He said that if the horse was in pain then the pulse was likely to be raised. Obviously i would still look at other signs as well as you mentioned but I think that checking the pulse is a useful idea if you're not sure what's going on.

Ignore the less useful posts. If we all took note of the vitriol that this place sometimes oozes we'd have have given up breathing long ago. Read and take on board what you need, thank the useful and ignore the less than so.
