our mare is a headshaker but recently her ears have become extremely itchy. she let mum put her finger in her ear to scratch it and her face looked like she was in heaven. there's also some slight swelling at the base of the ear.

i was wondering if this could be something like ear mites and if so how would we treat it?

i would def. get the vet to have a look. It could be flies, as they like feeding in the ears, and this could have caused an infection within the ear. It could be ear mites, but if so, they need treatment from the vet.

Hope that helps, sm x

As above. With ear mites you normally get intense irrritation/itching and a black/reddish discharge with perhaps a secondary infection. Defo a vet job!

if you can gently turn the ear inside out you should be able to see whats going on, ear mites you ill be able to see. horrid little beasties with lots of legs!

Deosect kills them, watered down..
