Symptoms?

With my horse it was bucking going into canter on the right rein only. In the context of a recent yard move which had triggered box walking.

-Dislike of being touched on their stomach or girth being done up.
-Change in behaviour/irritability.

Personally, any change in behaviour/condition/movement without an obvious cause would make me seek advice. I think it's important to remember that any horse can have ulcers, not just obviously stressy types.

Planting when asked to trot or canter in arena, and pinning ears if I insisted. Yawning and grinding teeth on the yard. Flinching very slightly when I touched his chest to do rug buckles or similar.

General attitude to work. My mare becomes spooky and nappy when her tummy is playing up. Some people might kick on and tell her to behave, but I know my horse and know when she's not happy.

Touchy around right flank initially, then progressed to be unhappy about being brushed anywhere between neck and hips on both sides.

Tucked up appearance around flanks.

Becoming picky with feed/ hay. Mostly would eat for a bit then stop and stand at the back of the box.

Quite flat and quiet to handle, but excessively spooky to ride. One little thing would set her off and she'd lose it for the rest of the ride!

Ended up being scoped and found she had multiple ulcers, both squamous and glandular, up to grade 3.

teeth and hooves coming at you for rugs, girths etc was the first time. Often went up instead of forward and was generally vile to be around. Was obese at the time so not an obvious candidate.

Second time was when she got really, really ill after a reaction to a procedure. Bloods were all over the place and she really didn't like having her stomach touched.

We get repeat behaviours of #1 about this time of the year which I think is a reaction to weather and grass changes.

He'd always been a bit girthy, I knew something was very wrong when I put my leg on and he turned around and went to bite my leg
