My mare slipped on the road and bashed her LH fetlock joint in Nov. The fetlock swelled up, had vet out she had xrays done. They found a hairline fracture of the cannon bone and also diagnosed synovitis (no cartilage change), having nerve blocked. She was 3/10th lame on flexion test. She had 4 weeks box rest and was then rexrayed. The fracture had healed, the swelling and heat had gone about 2 1/2 weeks into the box rest, but came up again a couple of days before she was rexrayed. She was now 2/10th lame on flexion and 1/10th lame trotting on the lunge. We decided to medicate the joint, then she had 4 days box rest, followed by ridden walking for 25 minutes and turnout. All good, she was sound and swelling and heat gone completely. Vet came back and gave us the thumbs up, sound on flexion, just slight uneven step when turning her. He said to carry on the walking and gave me an exercise plan, to build her workload back up.
A new horse was then turned out in her field. I wasn't told. So lots of galloping around and the next day the fetlock has swelled right up again with a little heat in it. So I have been icing it and bandaging when in, she is sound. Rang the vet who said to give her a days box rest and then carry on as I have been doing. He said she is always going to have a weakness now and obviously when she overdoes it, is likely to tweek it. So when she is stabled it is fairly swollen, yet does go down as soon as she is ridden or turned out.
So does this sound right? I just feel very uneasy about the swelling and just carrying on as normal. Just would like opinions as to whether this sounds right, or should I be speaking to vet again?
