I have the pre dog jitters (shall I shan't I ~ will I wont I) like the clappers!! John has asked me to bring a collar and lead, shall I take a muzzle just in case? If so what is the most effective and least invasive?

I have three days off then, so I am going to make the most of the time and so some intensive bonding, ie long walks and lots of game playing to get him to think of me as "fun"..

I wanted to ask some of you GSDM, what the significance of his ear tattoo is, and why and what sort of people have their GSDs tattooed - is it common place?

Any other advice greatfully received.

I unfortunately have house guests (not mine!) on Sat (when Sid comes home) I have communicated x 1000 that when I go to bed he is to be left alone 100% and if anyone goes in his room with him, woe betide them, from him and me!

Rather than a muzzle, maybe take a headcollar? That way you would have more control over his head area generally if he is a tank-dog! Although I think the basket type muzzles are the least invasive. I would just be careful he doesn't feel restricted as that will add to any stress he is already feeling.

Most GSDs are tattooed these days as well as microchipped. In fact all of the dogs I know are tattooed. It's for ID purposes, it was there before microchips for us and is a good back-up as microchips can travel around the body (B's is up near his ear somewhere!) it's just a quick stamp with a set of pins and a wee bit of permanent dye.
 
As CC says, if you feel you need something I would go for a headcollar type All my pups have been tattooed at around 7 weeks old, I prefer them to microchips because instantly identifiable, nowadays you have to give either a tattoo no or microchip on things like the BVA hip/eblow forms, and the vet checks the number at the time. Stops people taking a dog they know has good hips and have it x rayed in place of one they suspect is not so good.:mad: Presume Sid has been done by the rescue rather than by a breeder otherwise you could hopefully trace his history through it.
 
Sid was done prior to rescue it says on his thread, however it hasnt shed any light on his background sadly.

If he's happy with me and I feel competant with him - I'll leave him without, its more to aid me if I have to help him in/out of the car, in case he takes umbrage to me being so close to him in the confined space. Fingers crossed though he'll love me, I'm going armed with sausages and cheese!!!
 
The tattoo should definitely be able to tell you where he came from originally if it can be read, there are only a certain number of tattooists in the country...give me the number if you like by PM and I can see what I can find out.
 
Be good if you could find out more about him. Even if you can only get a few numbers the tattooist should have a good chance of identifying his breeder I would have thought, and they should be able to give you details of who bought him from them, even if the new owners didn't transfer details, which many don't. I once did a search of KC reg of dogs I had bred,it was amazing how many were still in my name because owners hadn't bothered to change .
 
Hey, re the other people being in the house, despite what you've said they prob will go and have a gawp at him as he's the new boy - not sure where his bed will be normally but would you consider having him in with you that 1st night?

Just thinking it may help to settle him after the upheaval and give you quiet time with him.

Realise this might not be ideal though if you want your room to be a Sid free zone :D and might piss your little ones off a bit.
 
I did originally think that, but, I don't let the dogs in my room if I can help it - so didnt want to start that ideally, as the day ater he'll be relegated to the lean to anyway. BUT if it does get a bit loud etc I will take him to bed with me :D I hope its not a warm night lol
