Afternoon!
What brand / make of turn out rugs do you all recommend for the larger horse?
Sidney is a 17.2 Hanoverian and has quite a long back. His current rugs (which he came with) are 7ft and fit lovely length ways but have started to rub slightly on his shoulders

.
Besides I want to treat him to some new togs - the new yard lothario should be suitably attired don't you think?!!

NB In light of his new-found luck with the laydees Sidney has expressed a desire to never be seen in anything pink or with flowers / patterns on it.

Premier equine turnouts are fab. Springy has one and due to her rather voluptuous figue I have found it is the only one that doesn't let her belly get cold! It has a detachable neck and hasn't rubbed her shoulders - she has lost a bit of mane though but think that may be the stable rather than the turnout rug.

This is her in it:

My horse had a new Rhino t/o rug this winter which I've been really pleased with. I usually have problems with rugs rubbing over his shoulders (he's very broad!) but the rhino seems to have plenty of room.

Premier Equine heavyweight rug, brilliant!! Got a detachable hood aswell and only around £90. Both mine have them.

One of mine is a 17'2 WB, but hes only 6'3 in rug sizes, it hasnt rubbed his shoulders tho. my other is a long backed mare (16'2 and 6'9-7ft in rugs) They are nice and deep aswell which is great.

rather than buy new rugs (coming from someone who has a healthy rug addiction

) would it be better to buy him a bib? Pidge wears a bib under his rugs and so far no rubs at all!

My 17 h ID x TB has a premiere Equine- great value for money and fit! I got a 6'9 and its huge tho! Could probably squash into a 6'3 but def go for a 6'6 next time, they are generous!

horseware ireland are the best for large horses or so ive found. They do an extra large rug which is specially made for larger horses there are two 17.2 hh irish draughts on the yard and these rugs are the only ones we have ever gotten to fit them.

I have given this reccomendation out in another forum - Taka from w/b if your horse has ridiculously massive shoulders. I adore Horseware rugs but non of the 'V' front ones fit him at all - look ok when stood up, soon as the head goes down poor hoss has a cold a*rse!!

Taka answered all my problems as they are also mega deep and shaped to tuck under their tummies - on a fully clipped out grey (read white) this was a nice plus!!

I woduln't touch Masta or Shires with a barge pole, I have never seen them on a horse and actually fitting. I do however love my Rhino, I had to buy the next size up but it fits perfectly and doesn't rub. My Fal is also fab, although it is a little too small it never rubs and always 'hangs' over her shoulders rather than pulling on them. The other rugs I have are Mark Todd - the lightweight rubs a bit but the mediumweight is brill, never rubs or slips, and much cheaper than Fal or Horsewear!

last year Pidge rubbed his shoulders so I bought some fleecy bibs from weatherbeeta with a surcingle - fab. however this year they don't fit him as he has filled out so I've bought some silky bibs that just sit round his neck with no fastenings, but despite my reservations they have stayed in place and no rug rubs at all

We have several large horses in 7ft Shires rugs and unlike the comments above they fit the horses very well and are generously deep around the belly they are a fraction of the price of others and they do a lovely red one if that takes your fancy.

WHen was the last time you tried a shires rug on a horse we have 2 horses in 7ft rugs and they fit a treat and are very deep, they also do a lovely red one !!!!!

Thanks everyone. Some different ones to go and have a look at.
Mind you the rug budget may have to go on someone elses rug as he's managed to shred his field companions rug again. I didn't ask if it was due to another love fest as I couldn't cope with the embarassment............
