Out of interest what do you all use to clean your tack? I currently have the Carr Day & Martin spray tack cleaner with a sponge. Do you all use sponges or cloths? Sometimes my tack doesn't actually look like it's been cleaned! My bridle is new and I want to look after it with the right products and hopefully will have a new saddle in a few weeks.

I use a leather conditioner made by Cremedemonthe ( he is on here, I am useless at tech stuff, so I can't give a link, but I am sure someone else will help !) - it is fantastic. I wipe the leather with a cloth after use, using a tiny bit of un-perfumed soap if needed, then use the conditioner with a lint free cloth (I use a flannel)

I had tried several of the branded cleaners, including glycerine based ones, but they never seemed to really condition the leather, and either made it feel oily or sticky.

Renapur leather balsam applied sparingly with sponge supplied. Used it for many years on everything leather from new to very old tack and boots. Keeps leather beautifully supple and doesn’t rot stitching. Never use anything else!

I use Horseman’s One Step for general cleaning and conditioning and Effax Leder-balsam which I think helps give additional protection against the elements. I don’t actually clean my tack that often as neither of mine seem to make it that dirty but I’ve never had any break or crack and it’s lovely and soft.

How do you get the grease off the tack before conditioning it? I really could do with cleaning my bridle...

I used CD&M cleaner and then the conditioner. I use an old flannel for the cleaner and then a soft cloth for the conditioner.
If it’s really dirty and greasy I use warm water with a dash of fairy liquid. I was advised to use this by my saddler, as long as well conditioned after.

You have tried it then!
Nice to see you the other day and I am still not sure if Gwen, my ewe, is just fat or pregnant!

Does anyone use this? Do you wash the tack in warm water first to get the grease off and then apply this with your fingers?
Oz sends you instructions to go with it but yes, hot water with washing up liquid, let it dry then apply the conditioner with your fingers, let it 'soak' for a bit then rub vigorously to polish. The more heat you can create the better.

Most of the products quoted on this thread have downsides - either high in oil (oil should be used on very dry tack only in most cases, unless instructed by the manufacturer), or in solvents. Anything that is easy to use, ie soft, is likely to be one or the other. I recommend and stock Oz's conditioner, recommend cleaning only with hand-hot water in a well wrung out old fashioned cotton dishcloth which you can wash and not throw away. If you do use a cleanser or a soap (former likely better than latter, I find Effax Ledecombi okay) you need to rinse it off, same as your face. And you'd not use a one step on your face....

And your labels are still better than mine!
