I was just wondering how often you all clean your tack and how/what with.
The reason i ask is because i have just spent 2 1/2 hours cleaning my daughters 2 ponies bridles.

I am a bit of a funny duddy and like it to be done just right, i first clean every piece with a toothbrush and soapy water, dry it off then go over it all again with a toothbrush and saddle soap. After that has dried i buff it up.

Most of the people at my yard think i am mad as they only clean there tack if they are going to shows, am i mad for not wanting my ponies to not wear dirty things.

Thanks
Louise:)

I clean my bridle once every few weeks - when it needs doing really! I clean it with glycerine saddle soap put on with a sponge and then put neatsfoot oil on it and leave it all to dry for the afternoon/overnight.

I don't think it's weird - i don't like her going round with dirty tack either! I do her stirrup leathers once in a while and wipe her saddle over with a damp cloth at the same time when it needs doing as it's a thorowgood :)

i clean it the same way! - but not with a toothbrush the second time round

I quick clean everything after each use and every fifth or so time strip clean.

Mine are washed with a facecloth rinsed out in warm water with a squirt of washing up liquid. then allowed to dry - the outside is then coated with a clear liquid shoe polish, the underside is then glycerined may occaisionally oil on inside only.

Never thought to use a toothbrush but then my gear doesn't tend to get particularly dirty.

A bridle cleaning rack is essential, and a saddle horse, the leather tack should be cleaned every day, I once had to clean five saddles and bridles every day to show standard!
Strip off metal items and put in bucket of warm water with a bit of washing up liquid.
Using bar type saddle soap, dip the soap in water and rub on a sponge to clean off dirt and grease, No need to dismantle completely if done every day[move the individual parts about and up one hole], wipe over with another clean soaped sponge then put tack together, then wipe over with the tiniest bit of oil to put a gleam on the outside of the leather.
Tidy up and hang everything up.
It is much easier to use tack cleaning spray as soap can make a right mess.
Any soap in the holes are a no no - use a matchstick to clean them.
my Zilco bridle is dipped in a bucket every day, and gets Brasso on the lorrinery when I am killing time.
