I'm told black is correct for a grey, & chestnuts should be the only colour to wear brown..

Personally, I think brown tack looks smarter, and suits my girlie better..

Tell me I'm allowed brown please! lol!!

I dunno what it is, but black tack just wierds me out!

DiablosGold, she used to be a very dark dapple grey, but as shes got older shes gone that funny light fleabitten in the picture above. She was a gorgeous dapple and really suited black tack then!

Havanna tack is correct for most disciplines, and goes a lovely dark, rich warm colour - not so hard as black.

I had a black saddle once and it turned a sort of coppery greeny black - very unattractive. Apparently, black leather was leather which had been dyed to hide imperfections and flaws in the leather, whereas havanna was a more superior grade of leather.

I must agree with how revolting London Tan is. I saw a chestnut turned out in London Tan. Everything matched - even the horse.

London tan or 'light havana' is revolting, I agree! Wrong on so many scales!!

Dark brown/Havana is gorgeous, my current saddle & bridle are this shade.. but I want to replace my Cliff Barnsby (I think) saddle for something more suited to me (its too big for my bum! lol)

We show and all my tack is havanna bar one dapple grey who as much as I tried did not suit havanna and has had to have black ....I hate it totally. If I wasnt showing and competing in other disciplines I wouldnt mind too much too be honest but for showing at Hoys/Rihs level havanna is a lot kinder on the eye apart from in the case of my dapple Grey!!

Brown tack is correct for the show ring, but for hunting, showjumping, dressage etc. either brown or black tack is correct, it's entirely up to personal preference

Havanna brown is always correct for any tack on any ridden horse, any colour, any discipline.

So agree! Even London/Newmarket Tan soon tones down to a lovely dark cherry colour and just gets better with age and care.
It's not long since black tack first made an appearance for the general public. Until then, the only horses to wear black were the Cavalry and harness horses; exactly how it should have stopped IMO, black tack was/is considered very common and tacky (excuse the pun!).
As yours is a fleabitten grey, then brown tack will go very nicely anyway!

I remember it well, it ws horrid, faded to a greenish tinge and stained breeches and gloves.
Even black leather harness comes with dark brown reins.

I cannot stand brown tack on any horse. It just looks grubby ald old-fashioned (should have a matching avocado cloth).

I much prefer brown then black.

I like the London/newmarket tan on Chestnuts. As I think tack should blend with a horse, not contrast and stick out against it. Ruins the image.

I agree, havana or a touch lighter would look lovely.

I have havana on my grey and she has a flea-bitten face, when she modelled bridles for a website I got to see all the colours on her and didn't like the black at all it seemed to look a bit 'harsh' on her. Her saddle is a Royal Oak colour which also looks really nice. I would go brown
