We are in the market to change our lorry and all I can find are lorries that have tack lockers in the horse area, now this is a big no no for me! I've seen horses prat about and get stuck on them and injure themselves, also to me it just reduces the space for the horse.

What do you all think??

Are they all the rage now?? We have a lovely lorry atm but the reason we want to change is due to the minimal amount of tack storage space, we have a tack locker but its in the living so doesn't affect the horses, unfortunately it only takes one saddle which isn't enough space for all my junk + 2 saddles for eventing!

Opinions on a postcard! I'm sure it just comes down to preference so I shall keep searching for a nice lorry without one!

I dont like them as heard of a few horses getting up on them, pawing and damaging the locker and themselves and also less room for them to balance.

Also don't like the rug racks in there as if there's an accident it's one more thing to cause injury.

I prefer the ones that go under the seats in the living area, but u can still access from outside.

Keep searching Our lorry (which isn't for sale! so not an advert) has the tack locker into the living. It takes two saddles on a clever swivel saddle rack made by my OH, several bridles, has a little set of drawers for grooming equipment and also has room for our show ring box. Like you I don't like them in the horse area as feel it really reduces the space for horse and for you to get to the horse.

I too dislike tack lockers in the horse area, to the point where i would discount one straight away if it had them. I bought my truck about five years ago and its pretty basic so defo no tack lockers.

I had mine adjusted so the top was on an steepish slope and covered with slippy plastic sheeting ,the locker climber slipped straight of .

Looks like Im in the minority as I like them providing they are high enough. Ive seen some that are so low that they are an accident waiting to happen. Storing tack is a problem and my last lorry had saddle racks in the bathroom cubicle which was fine for me as I would never use the bathroom but for someon that would use a shower then it would be useless. My current wagon has a tack locker but it doesnt go the full length of the horse area so the best of both worlds as I can travel my horse who is a big boy so benefits from the extra room at the far end away from the locker if need be and still have the benefit of somewhere to store my tack.

Luckily our lorry has been built by someone who put the locker alongside the living area (which is due to be finished) and the cooker/sink will sit in a frame on top of that, leaving the whole back horse area free.

We just put saddle racks in the living, along one wall, with bungees over for in case :) Our living is pretty basic, as I wanted the payload for the horses and all our stuff, I don't like tack lockers in the horse bit and they just add unnecessary weight IMO

having spent what seemed like an age at the time, trying to help a horse who had climbed on top of the tack lockers and then got his foot stuck through the window, i wouldn't have them given in the horse area, it was incredibly difficult to get to him and you couldn't get past the horse next to him. he was lucky to get out in one piece.

Blimey, he was lucky to survive that. We searched long and hard for a lorry with no tack lockers, nothing we travelled at the time was under 17.2h and with the lockers in it was impossible to get past the horses with a locker in front of them. I would not consider a lorry with them.

Lorries with spacious tack storage that are not in the horse area are out there so worth keeping on looking. Ours has a locker that opens to the outside but built into the living area which holds three saddles. Previous lorry had lockers in the horse area and apart the valid concerns about horses climbing on them we found the horses were often a bit snotty after travelling which didnt happen when we bought the new lorry. We put this down to seeds and particles from the haylage net falling on to the top of the locker where they would be at nostril height and liable to be breathed in. Whereas in new lorry particles just fall to the floor.

Big no no from me too! We had a 4 year old WB that not only climbed on the tack locker but also taught his new 4 year old 17hh friend to do the same :( Had to buy a new build as there were very few for sale at that time without lockers in the horse area, it seemed to be the trend for quite a few years but think it is now changing with storage under the living which is a perfect use of space. It also makes it much easier to get to the horses. Good luck in your search

Gosh that was good ! Can you recommend the broker, I am just about to sell mine?

I agree about not having in built tack lockers - I like to be able to duck under the horses to get to any of them at anytime and impossible with a large tack locker. When I bought my current wagon (which has really nice living and didn't want to spoil it) I had the loo/shower converted to a lovely tack room with saddle and bridle racks on one side and net fronted shelving on the other for all the other stuff bandages, boots, first aid, grooming kit, lead ropes and everything else. I use the luton for rugs. I never used the bathroom anyway, if we were away overnight we use the facilities at the event. Works really well.

I'm the same - I think that if they're too low, they're asking for trouble, but at a decent height I've never had an issue - mine are a good 4' inside the horse area and I've never had one even think of trying to get up there. The only thing I do find a bit irritating is that it makes it more difficult for me to move around between the stalls, but I'd rather take this inconvenience for the additional storage!

Interesting to see the majority isnt a fan of them and that the reasons are the same for most! My boy is 17hh or near abouts so ideally i want as much space for him in the back as possible! We have had a few lorries coach built for us so if i cant find what i want think we will go down this route!

I love the idea of swapping the bathroom for a tack storage area as we dont use our bathroom but my mum would prefer to sell as apprently it holds its value better with a toliet and shower in! Her choice as she owns it!!

Anybody else searching finding themselves drawn to the lovely £69,000 lorries?!! :p Slightly out of budget but they do look lush!!
