I don't know if anyone remembers my tack marking post?

In the light of what has just happened to Weezy (Weezy that's such bad news, I am sorry) I'm offering to do a tack marking session for anyone interested. I'm happy to come and do it in the Bath/Bristol/Chippenham area for the cost of the fuel to get to you, if you put up a donation to the Brooke hospital I'll come further afield.

In case anyone's worried, I've worked along side the Avon and Somereset police doing tack marking sessions in the past, I'm not a scammer.

What is the process? How is it managed if people sell/give away a saddle, etc.?

If I (when back in the land of the living), got some people together with all their tack, would you be interested in coming up the M1 to junction 25? If the proceeds go to the Brooke it would be extra popular. How much would you charge? We'd pay fuel and feed you

Ditto the first question, and if you go to J25, M1, I will come up - I'm at J24, and I have saddles, bridles and have friends with V expensive tack they would probably want marked.

Can you show some photos of marked tack - where is it marked, how do you identify the owner from the mark, what to insurance companies make of the idea, is it totally permenant....

If you sell your saddle, you can point out to the buyer that it's marked with your post code, it's up to them if they want to have it crossed out and their own post code put on it. With some Horsewatch schemes you can keep a record of your saddle's details, with your address etc, with them. Even better if your local Horsewatch group is linked to the police, as for example the Thames Valley group, as they will keep a log of the records. If and when the saddle is passed on, they need to be informed so that they can change the name of the owner.

The saddles are marked high up on the underside of the skirt on the nearside. Bridles are marked on thickest piece of leather, which is usually the underside of the headpiece.

Yes, it's permanent.

I'll try and get some pics of me tack marking this weekend, so you can see how it;s done, in the meantime I'll have a word with the hub about me coming up to you....he knew I was offering to do this, but I don't think he expected me to get any takers or be asked to go 'up country'.
