Tack room break-in - totally gutted!

How awful, hope u manage to trace items, we had it done many years ago and found our western saddle back up for sale through freeads.. Could not Afford it back and no real prof of ownership all picture someone was sat in it on pony.

How awful, I hope you can get your things back, it does make me so angry that scum bags such as those who stole your tack think that its ok to steal other peoples things, hope they get their comeuppance and you get your belongings back

Lots of stolen tack does end up in Ireland, police have told me that too when making enquiries with me about customer's stolen tack.
I suggest you look here:
http://www.ebay.ie/

Irelands ebay, good luck but it seems no matter what you do to protect your property no matter what it is, the thieving scumbags think it's their god given right to take it no matter what and if they want it, it WILL go.
So many of my customers tack has gone, saddles I've worked hard on to get them just right for the horse, gone, saddles I've stripped down and placed printed circuit microchips on the trees, stolen a few weeks later, rugs taken off horses out in the fields on coldest night of the year, even a city farm who are a charity had all the tack taken when they smashed their way through the roof. Several years back I used to fit and flock saddles at Crabbett Park livery, they had a metal lorry container there with all their saddles in, thinking it was secure as on the front they had welded plates to cover the padlocks so you couldn't get angle grinders or bolt cutters in.
One night and bear in mind this is next to a hotel, sports complex and houses, the "take as you likies" came in around 2 am started up a petrol driven cutter and cut the welded on plates off included locked padlock, cleared them out and NO one heard a thing!
Have you heard the noise a petrol driven cutter makes it's the same if not louder than a chainsaw or a stone cutter.
Luckily the lady who I had just sold a smashing new saddle to at Crabbetts had taken it home that night!

The FB group 'horses and ponies for sale in the north of scotland'. Have six saddles in one new post tonight. Two are black albions a K2 and a GP. Quite far away from you but just in case it's of relevance.

Police in sandon, nr Cambridge, herts, beds borders have done a raid and discovered a load of stolen tack ..... Worth a look there. Someone near me has been asked to go see if any of her tack is there after a theft a month ago

Thank you everyone for your support. Two equine police officers spent a couple of hours at my yard today. Cremedemonthe, strangely, someone said yesterday that my tack was probably already in Ireand and stranger still there was an Albion saddle, matching one of our missing saddles complete with Sprenger stirrups on EBay tonight. Saddle had slight damage on the pommel and we've emailed the seller for more details. I'm starting a new thread thanking everyone, far too many to thank individually. X

As title, a very big thank you to everyone who has replied to my thread - too many to reply to individually! We have a couple of leads to follow but we have seen a saddle with Sprenger stirrups,
looking very much like ours, online which we are following up. Equine police officers spent afternoon at the yard. Really, really cheesed off with one livery who I nearly had an argument with tonight (she even rang my husband) stating we should forget the loss of our tack (she lost nothing) in case the thieves came back and killed the horses and my liveries would leave because they were worried the horses would be killed!!! Arghhhh! X

Hmm...yes, I can just imagine your bog standard burglar coming back to bump off a load of horses because you called the police on them. Some people are a bit odd!

I hope the leads...lead to something. Sorry, couldn't resist that one! It must be awful :(

Hi keeperscottage, sorry to hear of your loss. Working for Herts Police, did the rural officers that attended speak to you about tack marking? There's some new kit we've been using all over Herts that stamps saddles with Herts Police and a unique ref number. Just a thought for future purchases to try and help.

Also, if you have any photographs of your tack that can also help in tracing it - by the sound of it your tack has some distinctive marks so this would help identify it.

www.immobilise.com can be used to put anything of value on including tack and even horses - it's a really good way of having details, unique numbers and photographs of expensive items in one place to help track stolen goods.

Sorry it's all a bit shutting stable door after horse has bolted but hopefully these ideas may help to prevent it happening again

JJ1987, police officers spent a couple of hours at my yard this afternoon, one discussing with my husband ways of increasing security. One officer knew me from donkeys years ago - when I was Mrs Something Else (I've remarried) and even before my daughter was born - she's now 24!!! Had a catch up! Seriously, though, we're totally gutted and my bright, friendly yard now seems dull and lifeless.

As your final paragraph, yup, stable door and bolting springs to mind....sadly..... Xx

Sorry to hear about the break-in. It sounds incredibly similar to the one we suffered in August here in Dorset, only on a smaller scale. We had out livery yard done over on a Friday night, accessed via the field (that contained a mare and foal), broke into two tack lockers similtaneously and stole iro 25 saddles, about 30-35 bridles, martingales, girths, saddlepads, stirrups, headcollars - you name it. Left some high value clippers and some brand new boots and didn't bother with rugs. off the premises within 5 minutes of the alarms being triggered. They did over several other establishments in the vacinity (although none as large as ours) and then moved on elsewhere. I also think I found one of my saddles advertised on a facebook page but I had no proof of purchase and only my word against theirs. Not a leg to stand on. My insurance didn't pay out as I have a clause in the small print that states that my tack is not covered if kept on a yard with 5 or more horses (E&L) that will teach me to read the small print!Anyway, sorry to ramble. Its soul destroying and I hope that you are one of the lucky ones to replace at least some of what was taken. :(

I was lucky, when our yard was done (we are 99% sure it was an inside job though) my insurance (SEIB) was one of the few that did pay out as the bit about the number of horses wasn't in my policy, nor did my tackroom have to be brick built and/or behind a door with a mortice lock. Everyone really needs to check this out pronto and change supplier if necessary.
