Tack room in a shed

I'm thinking of moving yards, the place I am considering doesn't have secure storage, everything is kept in an open fronted barn. I was thinking if I moved there I could get a metal 6x4 shed to kit out for my feed and tack. Has anyone tried this? Can you think of any issues? I was wondering if I would need to clad the inside to prevent condensation.

I have a wooden tack shed just outside my stable, never had problems but I've always made sure I keep saddle covered and feed in metal bins to deter rats.

i wouldnt think it would do either the feed or the tack any good to be in a metal shed. personally i would keep my feed in the open fronted barn and keep my tack at home as my yard was broken into twice and the tack room was close to the house where the YO lived..luckily, after my saddle got stolen i kept the replacement at home so was the only person in the yard who could still ride

Also if you want a shed it would be better to be breathable so wood would be preferable to metal

Sounds fine for feed and bits and bobs, but not for tack.

No need to lock up your feed I wouldn't have thought, but tack would definitely be safer at home.

The problem is that I just don't have room to keep my tack at home. We both work from home full time so the box room is my office and the spare bedroom has our wardrobes in and is also my husband's office. There's not much space in there as it is.

The thing is tack is a magnate for thieves, and unless you have a secure area to keep it at the yard, then it’s just asking for trouble (many yards don’t allow tack to be kept on site for that reason). And of course it wouldn’t be covered by insurance if it was stolen.

I used to keep my tack in the boot of my car. I had a very expensive carrier thing made for my dressage saddle so that it didn't get scuffed.

my tack was kept in my living room, a bit odd but better than being stolen...i have a tiny cottage ,living room,bathroom and kitchen downstairs and one bedroom upstairs, so no spare rooms to put tack..

When I lived in a studio flat ie no bedroom, my saddle was kept in the kitchen. I'd never leave my tack in a shed. I'd rather be tripping over it in the house than get it stolen (which happened to me once when the yard tackroom was broken into, hence keeping the replacement at home)

Aside from the real issue of theft of your tack, a metal shed is likely to get damp as condensation which forms in cold weather starts to drip from the roof. This would probably put me off storing feed or tack in there but I appreciate that you have a dilemma with storage.

Your tack won't be insured if stolen from anything other than whatever your insurance company decrees, aka not a shed or metal moveable container.
Boot of the car out of sight would be my suggestion.

My tack is at home, or in the boot of my car travelling to/from home. The only stuff that I leave with the horse is grooming kit and headcollar. He's on full livery and guarded by three loud fierce dogs and an equally fierce yard owner.
It took me years and ££££ to collect my tack and I couldn't afford to replace it now.

I used to have a metal tack locker which we bolted to the back wall and to the concrete floor. It was as thief proof as you're likely to get and never had any issues with condensation. I can see that might be an issue with a larger metal shed though.

I have used a "Stubbs saddle mate" to keep my saddle and bridle in the boot, covered with a saddlepad to keep it a bit more discreet.
Good bin for feeds and rugs or the shed could do for the rugs.

Yes, I imagine the reason nothing has gone missing at this yard is because there's not much to pinch, I suppose a shed is going to look very obvious that there's something worth taking in it. Other than renting the spare stable for all my stuff I may have to see if I can find somewhere at home at least for my saddle. I can't leave it out, I have cats and it would get shredded because they'd have to jump on it.? I might be able to clear out the coat cupboard and store it in there. Anyone want any coats? ?

I have cats and always have - they have never shown any interest in my saddle, though I do have a decent cover on in 'just incase'. On a saddle horse, a saddle really doesn't take up much room. I had two different flats, both first floor, and very small, and whilst it was a PITA, I got used to having the saddle in the kitchen and having to lug it up and down the stairs. I also had a teeny little bin store by the front door (never had a bin in it so it was clean) which I fitted a wall mounted saddle rack to and stored my saddle and bridle in there, along with my bike stored vertically. Its amazing what you can squeeze in when you need to.

Ah, that's an option I hadn't thought of! Thank you, that might be worth a try.

I wouldn't advise keeping any tack in a car, unless the car is in a secure garage all the time. My friend had her tack stolen from the back of her car, insurance wouldn't pay out as it wasn't in keeping with their security criteria.
Some good suggestions here regarding tack lockers, I would go with that rather than keeping in the boot of a car.
