We are thinking of having a tack room on the yard, havent until now because of security but we have too many people asking to leave their tack now.

I am wanting to know what is the security level needed for insurance companies to pay out? I am going to get yard insurance and also say people should insure their own tack as well.
Ive read so far than a deadbolt lock and alarm system are what is required, but im skeptical.

Do i need a heavy duty door, or a specific alarm and lock type. Any YO out there who have gone through this.

Thanks :)

I can't answer your question but I'd not be going this route, I'd be telling liveries they have to take tack home. Tack isn't left on our yard and this is well known. If it became known we kept tack then I think we may have problems.

You need to ask the insurance companies really, they will tell you what they require quite easily and then you know they can't wriggle out of it when it comes to it! :)

I think unless its a brick or other solid construction, you would be uninsurable, CCTV would be a necessity plus deadbolts and bars/metal mesh. We use a metal shipping container, but to be honest we have to change locks each time we loose a livery, just in case people aren't as honest as they should be about returning keys. We are all aware that our tack isn't covered by YO insurance and have signed a waiver to that effect. I bring mine home it's not really a huge problem for me.

If the value inside is over a certain amount, you will almost definately have to have a burglar alarm installed, and it will have to be set certainly every night and probably whenever there is nobody in the vicinity of the tack room. Again depending on stored value, you may also have to install CCTV. So all in all a quite considerable outlay. Just tell the owners to take their tack home or leave it at their own risk

I agree with asking the insurance company.

No matter what you do if the beggars want to get in they will!

A friend had alarms and a good guard dog - they poisoned the dog and returned a few nights later and removed part of the roof to gain access - and they lived not 30 yards away!

They will jemmy open any door. I had a large bar which is bolted through the wall, it is hinged across the door with a very expensive padlock holding it in place plus alarms and they still tried - unsuccessfully a couple of winters ago.

Loosed the dogs and they ran probably just as well because I grabbed an axe when the alarms went off and would have used it.

To be honest, I really would no go there. You are entering not only break in/massive insurance territory, but also the "borrowed saddle/bridle/bit" territory - one to be avoided at all costs ! I would never want to leave my tack in a shared room - I'm lucky that I have inherited a steel, wall bolted locker from another livery.

Unless your tack room is built as a fortified nuclear bunker they will get in to i!. Even a burglar alarm will not deter intruders as they will just break in remove the goods and dissapear with them with the alarm ringing! However always ensure that all tack is tack marked, all horses freezemarked and the roof of trailers and horseboxes postcoded in large letters. Other items can also be marked with Smartwater. If property is marked then at least the owners can be identified if found.
