Tack security marking, how to get it done???

How do I go about getting my tack security marked? As there seems to be a lot of thefts going on I thought it may be a good idea and maybe put a poster up at the yard to see if anyone else is interested.

Who does it? and what is the best method? have heard about micro chips or actually stamping on numbers but where is the information held? What is the chance of recovery/has anyone had anything returned to them which has been marked? Who holds the details and who checks it!!!

What's to stop someone selling the tack on at markets or even ebay?

Lots of questions I know!!!!! and prob in the wrong section!!

I don't like to be negative - and may be we are an exception - but we had all out tack marked by the local Horsewatch woman - but when it was stolen, the saddles, with their postcode on - sat in the police station they were handed in to when recovered and noone made any attmept to contact us. We only found out we were there as another horsy person went to reclaim some of her tack, and was given ours by mistake - so she contacted us. The police in this case were useless, and we were left wondering why we had ever bothered have the tack marked as by the time we got it back we had had to replace it - and of course, when it turned up we could not even claim insurance on it, even though we had spent money on new tack. I woulf never bother have it done again - but would spend money on getting good insurance for replacement costs.
 
The police came to our stables and security marked our tack and trailers. It might be worth your while phoning your local police station to see if they offer this service.
 
Contact your local police and ask to speak to the crime reduction officer, they may have the stamps to mark your tack - they can put your post code on the flaps - this only works on leather tack though. Or if you are ever over this way I'll mark it for you. Where ever you go there should be no charge for this.

OK some police officers and property officers might not think to look for post codes - but that seems a poor excuse for not bothering to get it done - we ALL have a responsibility to try to reduce and solve equestrian crime.
 
I bought a set of leather stamps from ebay which basically were the whole alphabet. Stamped all my saddles and bridles and put up signs in yard saying all were postcoded. We did have a break in about a year after and they took all my vet supplies etc and had obviously picked up my saddles and seen the postcodes on them and left them all. I definately know they had checked the saddles as they were all moved around. It cost me about £10 in total so from my point of view well worth the money.
