Tack storage at field

My horses are field kept with shelters. For years I got to them by car, but now cycling. To make it work I cycle in rubber jodhpur boots and carry tack up. However I now can't find any cheap rubber jodhpur boots to replace the ones that are about to give up. Also I am fed up with carrying the tack by bike.

I want to either build secure storage but that looks scruffy to deter thieves and that is OK for leather tack or find some rubber jodhpur boots. On the storage I suspect that only metal will be secure enough but can't figure out how to make sure it won't get condensation and make it a wet environment for tack. Any suggestions / advice?

what about one of those ifor williams tack packs for trailers? potentially you could attach it to the back of the shelter (out of sight) the same way it would be attached to a trailer.

Do you have a shed for a feed room or anything? could you put something in that?

Regarding making it look scruffy to deter thieves, this is where old manky rugs come into their own. Drape them over the storage container so that it just looks like a tattered unusable rug or two lying in an untidy heap. If you can also cultivate a spider colony in the rugs, then so much the better. For safety, make sure that the horses don't have access to the rug covered container.

Years ago I kept tack in a wheelie bin. Saddles fit and if there's a bit of "rubbish" on top no one would know. If anyone lifted the lid they saw rubbish, saddles were underneath. Obviously it's a risk but it worked for me for years.

I used to leave my saddle in a feed bin if a friend was riding the following morning. One night we had the feed (and bins) stolen. I'd forgotten to leave the saddle that night - thank god.

Thieves tend to be a determined lot unfortunately. I've had two trailers stolen, despite them being plastered in Farmkey stickers and having both wheel and hitch locks in place. They broke into the tack/feed room for good measure and riffled through every cupboard. I never left tack on the yard though. They'd almost certainly been 'casing the joint' beforehand, and knew precisely when I was there and how to deal with the locks that were in place. Also judging by ow they willingly cut through steel security fencing to nick the front cupboard doors off of a handful of caravans in storage, I wouldn't personally leave anthing of value that you could bring home out in a field, whether its locked away or not.

I think you'd have to get really creative, they will steal absolutely anything! I lost the entire tack room including ripped rugs and single boots and buckets , just everything.

So, you need camouflage. Any chance of adding a false wall to your shelter, or false roof? Anywhere away from the built up parts that you could hide a container in the bushes or even in the ground?

I do agree that a bike trailer is prob your best bet.

And for your boots, if you get safety stirrups you can ride in pretty much anything.

The hunter welly jod boots are very fashionable amongst non horsey people so there are cheap versions in high street shops. I saw these the other day, they might work

They're not cheap and technically not jod boots but Merry People boots are brilliant and I think they'd be fine to ride in as long as you had stirrups wide enough. They're a bit chunkier than a jod boot but not so much that they'd be dangerous.

False wall on the rear wall inside the shelter. Make a sort of washing line to hang some rugs on in front of it so any door is hidden. I think the bike trailer is the best idea though.

I’ve been lusting after a pair of these but they are expensive!

The only time I ever kept tack at a field, it was in a metal storage shed that was a 10min walk from the gate, in a dip so not visible until at least 5-6min into the field. You’d not have got a vehicle back up the very steep sides of the dip. We tacked up by the shed and rode out to the gate.

Now, we have nowhere to hide such things, but my batteries for my fence last longer if a good walk from the gate and out of sight, so same idea there. In a bush, camouflage net over the top, in a garden storage container of sorts?

I’d get a trailer for the bike though.

Yep thieves will take anything left in a field. I even had a round hay feeder stolen despite the field gate being padlocked as was the feeder itself!
Best solution in your case would probably be a dog trailer to hitch to the bike, just don't leave that out on view.

Folds flat to store....you could find a plastic box with lid for the saddle or something similar

Thats a good find! Maybe a saddle mate held in place with Bungee's and over top to hold the saddle on round corners.

Actually have a look at Wayfair.co.uk
they have several dog carriers to go on the back of a bike, so similar to the above link but with a tent like zipped cover so waterproof and less likely to loose anything round a corner.

OMG, think I've just worked out why I inherited a wheelie bin with the shelter in our field😂 Always wondered, we don't get a bin collection and it's from the wrong local authority too!!! It's a pretty good idea . . . Wouldn't do long term but maybe if popping to tack shop and need room in the car for 20 mins or so.
