Tack up for travelling?

I don’t usually - I wouldn’t risk them getting a bit of tack caught somewhere. That said with a good traveller and for a reason it would probably be ok. Plenty of people do for hunting.

I do with one ,as Bernster says, far too wired to do it safely at a venue. I put a rug over the saddle and take the reins off the bridle.

I do put the saddle on for short trips to local competitions etc. Makes it easier on arrival. I don't put the bridle on until I get there and don't tack up for longer trips.

I will occasionally travel with a saddle on with rug over. If its too warm for rug I make sure my stirrups are wound up so they can't come down. I wouldn't travel with a bridle with my boy as he likes to rub his head in the haynet!

I used to, and worked at a yard where it was done all of the time. But then, I realised that every horse has getting white hairs, whichever brand of saddle and whichever saddler we used. The final (best) saddler cured it by changing/mending saddles and telling us to quit travelling them like that as they lean on the partition and twist the saddle.

It is true, they do tend to only lean one way, so it makes sense that the saddle will end up twisted.

We quit doing it and horses no longer got sore backs.

For mine, there is one venue 500yds from my door and I will travel tacked up there. Other than that, we practice tacking up in the wagon at home so I can do it in safety once we arrive.

I have done before when I knew my horse wouldn't be calm enough to tack up easily on arrival. I put the saddle on with a fly rug over it.

My saddle is completely flat, though, as it's a TCS, I'd not be so happy about putting a traditional English saddle on in case she flattened, rubbed, or caught it somehow.

Almost always travel in a saddle, usually with a light rug over. No bridle though, although have done for very short trips. I just find it easier on the other end if saddles are already on. My partition doesn't really have anywhere to get caught on or rub. I know horses can come up with most scenarios but if I thought about that for too long, I'd have to stop going anywhere at all. In fact, the one partition incident I had (wasn't correctly fastened), it was the saddle that stopped the partition from hitting my horse.

I think leather tack will pull apart far more easily than the nylon headcollars a lot of people use. If travelling with tack on does cause an accident, it'll be to my horse, not to innocent bystanders/ motorists, if the idiot gets loose with no tack on. Agree, there are risks everywheree, you have to weigh up which is the lesser.

I travel B fully tacked up for RC training sessions and clinics, unless it's stupid hot weather in which case I'll wait till I get there. This is in a 3.5 box with a decent partition width, B doesn't usually lean to either side.

Used to travel fully tacked up when I hunted and drag hunted.

Not usual for me to tack up prior to comps tho, not at all as the trip is usually longer.

Yes I generally always travel tacked up if journey is less than an hour or so but I travel without a partition so horse has plenty of room and I'm mainly going hunting.

Very, very rarely and only for a quick 5/10 min journey.
Coblet does occasionally lean against the wall so will never put a saddle on her. The other one is a solid traveller so could, but he is a hot horse so always travels naked.
All my horses have stood quietly to tack up at venue, and if they didn't I would put the training in.

Yes, for short trips en route to a fun ride or to a hack. I wouldn't have thought twice about doing it for hunting either, but yes, there's an element of risk and I wouldn't have done a long journey like that.

Experienced and sensible horses if you are just going local for something like hacking/gallops (or the hunters do it) then I would, but for anything else no. I don’t use partitions in my trailer and take one and cross tie though.

Never since being involved in helping to stem a friend's horse from bleeding to death before arrival of (luckily) on site vet. He had caught his bit and ripped half its mouth away, the leather on the bridle did not break but the horse's mouth did. Horrendous and thankfully rare accident, but I just would not risk it with one of mine from then onwards.

Saddle on for short ten min trips, sensible ones only. Never bridle. Take off for trip back. Treeless saddles so mostly soft.

I used to travel tacked up for hunting. Always with a rug to protect the saddle. If travelling for more than 30 mins I left bridle off to allow horses to eat hay. I always put bridle on before unloading.

Yes, I am boxing to hack every time with a 5 minute journey and the only thing that makes it feasible is travelling both ways with full tack on as I am unloading by the side of a road.

What did he catch it on? I can't see anything in my van that could do that.
