Does anyone on here use a tail bag to keep their grey`s tails clean over winter ?

Please can you recommend to me a good one that stays on well and preferably is also water resistant or waterproof as I don’t think it would be very nice for him to have a soggy tail all the time with our rainy British weather !

He is out 24/7 so his tail ends up black after a few days and its so hard to get it white again.

I have a feeling that you might be fighting a losing battle with that one...

I have personally given up and mine comes in at night! I am just ignoring it but am itching for the ground to dry up a bit so I can get the "products" out!!!!

I knew someone that used to plait her's 24/7 (though again it came in at night) but I never saw the horse with its tail loose even when she rode so cannot really see the point - she never took it anywhere either!
 
I have a tailgator for my boy, works a treat, and you can buy a spray for keeping it fresh....does say you can leave on for 2 weeks but i like to take off every few days to brush it out and re do
 
Someone on our yard uses one (doesn't have a grey tail, it's a bay) but I've often wondered if it ok to leave them on, as this horse seems to have it on all the time.

I'd of thought it would cause problems (like leaving a tail bandage on) how exactly do they tie on? as never looked at them (or at this particular horse on our yard) so I wouldn't know how they are attached, are they fixed to the dock?
 
Sorry I dont think I explaind myself very well !

I didnt want to use it all the time, I usually wash his tail on a Friday and again on the Saturday before a comp on the sunday and I just wanted to use it for those days to stop it getting dirty overnight when he lies on it when he rolls.

Kenzo - this is somthing I wanted to know aswell , what stops them from slipping down the tail and falling off , surely to stop this they would have to be done up far too tight? Or do they attach to the rug somehow?

Loulabelle - where can you get the tailgator ones from - I had heard of them being good before.
 
a couple of people on our yard uses tail bags, they plait the tail loosely (bottom of the dock down) and then put the tail bag on and push the strings/velcro piece through the plait and do it up. they stay put for quite a while before you need to redo it.
 
kenzo i can only talk for the tailgator as its what i use but you put one plait in the tail from the bottom of the dock down and the bag slips over this (it is slightly elasicated at the top but my boy is a gypsy cob and its not too tight on his rather thick tail) there is then a velcro tab you thread through the plait which is used to secure it in place. Doesnt go on the dock so doesnt cause the probelms tail bandages do
My boy has worn his for the past 3 winters and aslong as the tail itself remains dry there hasnt been any issues.....although i do take it out when his being ridden or driven, and i do take it out and brush it through and re do every few days :)

I have a cob with a full white tail. I also have OCD and love to keep the tail looking good.

When he came to me the tail was stained and it took a while for it to grow out. He often gets poo on his tail and it stains afer a while.

Anyway, I have a tailgator bag and it is fantastic. It is waterproof. I plait his tail, fairly loosely, from below the dock down to a couple of inches from the bottom.

The bag has two straps which go through the top of the plait and fasten at the other side. You then cover that with another bit of velco. It is really secure. It has never come off in the field and it has never damaged his tail. It is on for at least a week as I take it off at weekends when I'm riding. I use it all year round. Afterwards, I just brush it through, put conditioner on an bag it up again. I wouldn't be without it now.

I wanted to have a look at the bag on this horses tail at our livery yard as sometimes I turn him out but I didn't think said horse or owner would appreciate me rummaging around his bottom area and examining his tail just to satisfy my curiosity! :D

Etd to say, I might look into getting one for buggar luggs, he's got a lovely silver tail when it's clean, but I usally have to keep washing it to keep it looking nice and clean as I hate seeing it dirty, but don't tend to bother in winter due to the cold water etc,

I must admit they do look daft on but couldnt live without mine, otherwise my boy jingles with muddy dreads in the winter months.... and i think if i remember rightly that they also promote growth....not that my boy need it haha
 
I have a cob with a white tail and I'm using a tailgator tail bag on him, and I would swear by it. He wears it for two weeks at a time, comes off on a saturday night when it gets washed and brushed, then replaited on the sunday and back on. I did wonder about leaving it on all the time but he seems happy with it and it's doing no harm at all to his tail.

They are a lifesaver!

But have to be used with care...You do have to be careful if the horse is out in a field with a hedge or bushes in as they can get caught up, and as others have said, if the tail and bag get really muddy and wet as can happen if they roll in a bog (personal experience here!) the best thing to do is take it off, wash tail and bag and start again...

There are ideal for overnight use before a show, and once the horse is used to them, we warm up in them and only take them off a the last minute to minismise the arena sand that gets into the tail (as you may have guessed, I have a white grey with a long, silvery tail :D)

The Tailgator ones are probably the best for field use, and they also do a fabulous mane and tail conditioner....if you put that on a just-dry tail, braid the hair and put the tail bag on, the results are wonderful!
 
I've got a palomino who cr*ps down her tail so I tailbag it all the time Tailgator is the best one I've tried she doesnt mind it being on its taken off daily and her tail is brushed out replaited and bagged her tail is in lovely condition.
