Tail being chewed!

Only really noticed today properly. My mares tail is definately being chewed...what an arse! Shes out with 4 other ponies in the day...2 are shetlands! Been and bought some spray cribbox which i'll put on before she goes out in the morning.

Pointless post! Just having a whinge! :rolleyes:
 
You may have to experiment with what stops them :D

Plait her tail and tie it up, that helps a lot and shouldn't be a problem at the moment when the flies are not out in force.

I have to plait the mares tails in summer when the foals start getting mouthy. Our flies are horrendous, so I tie the tail up in a knot and thread baler cord through it so that they can still swat flies. If you thread the cord through no worries about it getting caught because it will just pull out.
 
When I had a homebred colt he chewed his dams tail and then started on a pony. I rubbed chilli powder into the ponys tail nd it did seem to stop the chewing.

Maybe they liked the taste? they eat turmerc after all.

Cribox stopped my youngster in her tracks!
 
We had one that used to chew bensons tail. I smothered his tail in mustard and horseradish thick gloop, stopped him doing it, but if I ever missed a day, he would be chewing again!
 
I had one for a while that ate tails... he didn't just bite the hair off at the dock, he chewed it and swallowed like it was hay! :eek: I worried he'd have a huge hairball blockage somewhere down the line.....

Plaited the tails, big plaits, lots of little plaits, Cribbox, mustard, chillis, TCP and Dettol were all ignored or worse, nommed up tastily :rolleyes:... drove me to distraction as the rest of my herd wandered around with tails the size of foals... and as hairy cobs they just looked stupid, frankly.
 
Try jeyes fluid. I had a 3 year old I bought from Ireland who was very mouthy and immature and chewed tails from the dock and ate them! If you pulled his mane, he tried to eat that too!
In the end, the only thing that actually stopped him was jeyes fluid, only problem is that it stains grey tails.
