Tail Chewing

Hello

Just looking for any ideas, my horse has started chewing his field mates tail! Now we are using no bite but that doesnt seem to be working anymore, does anyone else have this problem? He is out with 2 other geldings and only chews one of thems tail.

So thats where my cobs mane has gone! Someone chewed it so i had to smarten it up, now its really short. Good job im not planning to show him this year. Sorry no idea how to stop yours having a nibble.
 
I have an filly who I bought as a companion for my WB and she has chewed his tail off. It seems to be a baby horse thing. I have used conditioner (furniture polish:o)on what is left of the tail and this seems to have reduced the chewing.
It sounds as if you have an older horse who is doing the chewing. I have no experience of this,but I would suggest you put objects out to keep the chewer busy and stimulated. Try tree branches(horses love chewing,peeling,scratching on these) traffic cones....basically anything safe or edible to give your horse alternative oral stimulation.:)
 
yeap a 24 year old gelding in my herd is chewing my horse's tail! I did use no bite but switched to crib stop as it is water resistant (won't run off in the rain) and this is helping. Spray it on every day if I can!

Chewer has since moved on to chewing another's tail :o
 
We have a tail/mane muncher in the field too. Pony had a lovley long mane but is now sporting a 'half' mohawk look :eek: Spikey bits everywhere, I have tried the same, conditioner, plaiting (it was a good idea at the time lol) but nothing has stopped the hair munching. I wondered if it was some kind of deficiancy (spelling??) or boredom that would cause this?

In short not got a clue how to stop it, will be keeping an eye on this thread for tips aswell though :)
 
I could get a tail cover which would work but with all the bugs about at the moment not sure it would be fair, good idea for the winter tho thanks :)
