I have a cob with a big thick tail. I would like to do some long reining with her but I get the lines taffled up with her tail. I tried a tail bandage but it slid down and I finished up in a tangle of bandage and lung lines!

Plait it in one thick plait from the dock down. Fold the plait up. Use vet wrap to bandage, only from the below bottom of the dock down, It can stay in for as long as you like.

I think it may partly be your technique because I've long reined plenty of cobs without a problem. Plait the tail up if you want but think about why you are getting tangled. Walk a bit to the side if you need but usually very thick tails are easier than ones that the horse can swish about everywhere ?

Agree, how is the tail getting in the way? Unless she is very abnormally swishy, not sure how you are getting tangled up? Agree though, if it is a problem just plait and fold up as done for polo, eventing, hunting etc.

You don’t even need to plait just put a tail bandage on the bottom, fold in half or even three if it’s long and finish the bandage up as you would normally, round the top.
