How do you start a tail plait. Someone said tie a knot at the top ..... ? Have entered into a showing class this weekend and need to learn how to do this Quick!! Any hints/tips/full instructions appreciated.

I usually start by taking two small strands - one from either side then cross turnover, then twist them back on themselves (so they end up back on their original sides but chained together). Whichever side of the "plait" is on the bottom, I then take another strand from that side to give you the three sections.
Does that make sense?!

Hey, thanks for that, makes perfect sense in theory .... will practice tomorrow morning and hopefully I will get it right in practice too!!

Just keep it very tight. Every time you bring a section in, you need to pull the whole plait back onto the dock. The smaller the sections, the easier it is!

Thats interesting. Showing isn't really my thing, just want to give the horse some show experience. But now you mention it I haven't seen many plaited tails recently!

I love plaiting and always feel very proud of my efforts, and like the protection that a full tail gives. I'd much rather spend 5 mins putting a good plait in than taking all the hair out however "outdated" the effort is.

Yep, most judges don't like to see a plaited tail on anything other than a child's show pony these days I'm afraid....

A raked/pulled/however you wish to do it tail is correct for showing. Plaiting is incorrect for it
