I've never used one before, I've also never pulled a tail

So, I want to get a rake for my mare

Would you?
What is the best one to get?
Where do I get it from?
Will it come with instructions? that even I could understand

Her tail isn't as filthy as it looks, she's coloured so she has some brown hairs in it

It would be a shame to use a rake on that tail! Just pull it a bit from the sides and underneath, it doesnt look like too much needs to come off and cut it by a couple of inches at the bottom.

Rakes are good for horses that don't like their manes or tails pulled or if they are really thick. The hair that is!

I'd use one - get one a medium blade to take the bulk out of the sides, to 3/4s of the way down her dock. Then use a fine blade rake (you can get very little ones that are great for precision) to tidy up the edges.

I used a smart tails rake on my mares. She had a very full tail when I started and I had NEVER used or even seen a rake used before!!!

Don't think I dod too bad!!! I used a Coarse blade to start, then switched to a Medium one (but think I would have got away with just using a medium one), I finished with a finee blade on the sides.

Since this pic was taken I have pulled/rake a little further down her dock and cut a couple of inches off the end of her tail. Looks fab IMO.
