Hi - could anyone recommend a good tail rake and advise which size and grade I should go for? I was looking at the Mars ones but they come in so many sizes ie fine, medium and coarse and then loads of different teeth numbers - from 6 through to 30.

Do rakes cut or pull out the hair? I don't really want to be left with a bog brush effect!

Thought I would at least start with a rake and then finish by pulling???

I have a smart tails rake. I wasn't sure which to get so went for medium to play safe. It cuts the hair but not in a blunt way. It does give a good effect. I used it to do a tail easily and then thin out a really thick wirey mane. It could be easy to get a bit carried away though!!

Hiya

I just got a mane rake for my mare who HATES having her mane pulled ! I got a fine one with 10 teeth - it took me a while to work it out because I have seen people use them before by just combing through the hair (some comb over to the other side and do the underneath) but then I figured out that if you use it like a pulling comb ie hold long hairs brush up the shaft then change the angle slightly on the rake (rather than pulling) you get a much neater effect ! I am really pleased with mine - sorry I don't know what brand it is as it was the only one my tack shop had left !! they said they have sold loads of them in the last 2 weeks ( lots of hairys being de fluffed !! ) ... also not tried the tail yet !!

I bought one of the Solo rakes the other day. I think that the smart rakes are about £25 each and I did borrow a medium and a fine to have a play with, then bought the Solo rake for £12.99 (cheapskate, I know!)

I've been really pleased with the results. Mine are not show horses by any stretch of the imagination, but they actually look quite neat and tidy at the moment. One of my older boys will not tolerate having his mane or tail pulled and will go vertical if you go near him to pull his mane. He was as good as gold to rake through his mane, thinning it - and then I simply shortened it with the solo comb.
