Pony started rubbing tail about 2 months ago. We have been washing it in dermoline indecticidal shampoo, to begin with this stopped her rubbing it, but then about 2/3 weeks later she would be rubbing it again, so we would wash again and so on. I have also made sure she is wormed for pinworms.

Im not sure what to do with it now, she isnt rubbing anywhere else just her tail, none of the other horses she shares a field with are rubbing.

She has been rubbing it again last night and we only washed it a week ago, it seems to be overnight that she does it most, but i guess this could be because she is in and so has handy walls to scratch on.

Any ideas what could be causing this and what i should do?

Thank you

My rising 3 year old does the same and has done since he was about 16 months old- only in the warmer weather and only in the stable.

Its really annoying isnt it?! I wash my boys tail regularly, make sure him bum and sheath are clean and all of his tummy as sometimes these things can make them itch.

However it sounds like its a habit like my boy- he wont rush to do it when he comes in but will do it say, if hes got no food.

I always put him in a rug with a large tail flap- in the winter a light outdoor (as he's rugless outside) and a fly rug in the summer, then if he itches there isnt as much damage :)
