My gelding is on restricted grazing at the moment (due to laminitis) and as he's in his stable more throughout the day, he's started rubbing his tail. I'm pretty sure it's through boredom - does anyone have any tips on how to stop him?

Thanks!!

Hi hun, maybe it could be the midges with the warm wet weather, what i would do is to give the tail a really good wash if there are no midges and you have a clean tail and he is still rubbing i would defo worm him for PIN worm, its the worm which gets over looking but drives horses mad they have to itch the tail and bum. if you look on viovet they sell lots good wormers look for the one that treats hair, neck skin and pin, costs less than 15.00 and would do the trick. Pin worm doesn t show in worm counts if your worm count came back clear. good luck hun let us know how you get on !!!:D

Was also going to suggest checking for pinworm, as said they dont show on worm counts but occasionally you can spot the little buggers in the poo. Theyre white and about an inch long, thats how i found out my boy had them. He'd been scratching his tail like crazy and just put it down to the midges as he's quite an itchy horse anyway, but gave him a dose of Strongid-p on vets recomendation and flushed a load out and he's been a lot less itchy ever since.
