Tomorrow i have to get my daughters pony sparkling white for a show, the problem is her tail it has a horrid yellow tinge to it at the bottom even after scrubbing with fairy liquid for ages. Have bought a load of denture cleaning tablets to do the job i hope but how many do i use and do i use it in the final rinse or should i wash them out afterwards. Many thanks .

I use hibiscrub on my horses tail and also on his white socks. It is the only thing that gets them really clean which is probably why it is marketed as a cleaning agent for cuts, mud fever, etc.

I use 8 sterident tabs into boiling water and then soaks the tail for 10 mins. Obviously just below the dock.

Really works too

Napisan in hot water works brilliantly.

Although if its a mares tail, I find that sometimes the orange tinge won't come out, so I wash the tail every week and keep it in a tail bag. That way, new unstained hair grows down.

I use a "Touch of Silver" shampoo which is aimed at white haired ladies. It is purple and does a great job.

So.... do you stand there holding up a bucket at your horses rear with his tail dunked in it for 10 mins?! I think my arms would give out after 2 mins!!

many thanks everyone, i tried denture tablets but not helped much , i put loads in boiling water and soaked the tail for ten minutes but it didnt come up beatifully white and i was worried the tail might fall out. the top half is sparkling but the bottom half still looks as if i need to use a limescale remover on it.

Tesco baby wash. Dilute in the water, and then add direct to tail. Rub with rubber gloves on (friction helps) and then leave while you wash rest of pony. Finally rinse, and soarkly white

britestar will that work on a yellow tail caused by a mare weeing on it. i have tried hibiscrub, lyn russell's whitening shampoo and fairy washing up liquid this afternoon as well, all to no avail

Have you tried washing powder (either the soap flakes for washing by hand, or the non bio tablets). This normally does a good job on my ID mare's v thick yellow tail if she is going public.

The other thing is once it is clean, to use a lot of mane and tail detangling spray on it, which seems to repel further dirt.

My mare still needs a tail wash once a week though to keep her looking respectable.

Get a tail bag. Seriously. I keep my mares tail in a bag, and it stops the wee staining the tail - the bottom bit that still looks manky. The sparkling clean will grow down to the ends staying clean and unstained.

Don't forget the conditoner - human hair conditioner NOT spray stuff. I find the silicone type sprays (mane & tail detangler) acctually dry the hair out and cause it to absorb stains.

I use vanish spray! The first time I was worried it may be too strong, but been using it for years now and has never damaged their tails. I don't use it every week, normally just the first deep clean of the Spring! You spray it on to a damp tail and rub it in, it lathers up like soap, leave it for a minute or two then rinse out well.

I also couldn't have coped without mane and tail spray in my life! Tesco Value polish is also quite good, anything to repel the dirt so it never gets to that yellow stage throughout the rest of the year then it should easy wash with normal shampoo/washing up liquid.

You've probably given the bath by now. Hope she looks good. I bathed my boy today too, promptly followed by a good roll in the field.

Many many thanks everyone, i have put the tail in a tail bag tonight and have resolved myself that i must wash it weekly. She did look lovely except for the yellow tail and hind legs which i even tried to cover up with chalk unsuccessfully. I didnt see any other tails which looked half as bad so felt a little embarassed but at least i had a go. Thanks again for all your ideas i may well be trying them all out.

Certainly do. They key though is not to use gallons of water one kettle full with some cold water added is enough.

A cheap alternative to white sock makeup is to make a pste from Curash baby powder and warm water.

Empty the pot of Curash baby powder into a Tuppaware container, add enough hot water to make a thickish paste and then apply to socks with a sponge, work in to the roots of the hair. Allow to dry - I bandage overnight with white bandage pads under bandages.

When dry either rub off extra with a cloth or brush with a soft brush.

Remember which brush you used though! I forgot and brushed my chocolate coloured horse with the brush that I'd brushed his socks with. Looked like a very bad case of dandruff!

Curash is a brand of baby powder that has Zinc in it.
