My New Forest used to have a lovely, full thick tail and it's just become more wispy and thin the older he's got. He's not got worms, sweet itch or anything like that.

Is there anything I can use or treat with to encourage it to go back to what it was?!

My TB is the same, it's just old age i fear. I've the opposite problem with the WB, he has an amazing tail which he doesn't like being pulled but his mane is a disaster, thin and wispy with an almost none existent forelock. It's a nightmare to plait.

Definitely nothing having a sneaky chew on it? My old pony had a lovely thick tail when I got her...but our sheep loved nibbling on it.

My yearling who went to his new home over the weekend did but not sure how much! Time will tell I suppose.

He's only 6 so old age can't be getting the better of him yet I hope. Ha ha!

I never brush it and try to leave it well alone so it's very annoying.

Make sure you trim it short enough that it doesn't drag in the mud and he can't stand on it (especially if you have banks in the stable, which always let mine stand on the end of his tail.)
Never brush it unless it has been washed and showsheened first and then only the minimum amount needed.

it may have been coincidence but i found that when i was using mane and tail conditioner and certain shampoos/products my boys tail got really whispy. i stopped using these products and now use only baby oil and thats only if we are going places or have people coming to see him. his tail is now back to being beautifully thick and long after 2 years of growing! i also never use a comb/plastic curry comb. i only use soft water brushes on tails, it may take longer but it doesnt damage the hair as much. :)

Apply MTG and avoid brushing with anything other than a body brush. You should see our greys tail,it started falling out after SFAS and apart from what was on the dock,it all came out leaving a horrid exposed lower dock with just few remaining wispy hairs. All down to a tail; bandage. We applied MTG and it is growing back well, after 4 months its grown about 4/5 inches and back to the usual thickness.Ahhhhh.

I rarely brushed mines after read some shiw producer didnt due to breaking the hairs etc. i just fingered baby oil through it to de tangle when needed :)

I like my boys tail nice and thick, in the summer i dont brush other than with a body brush, squirt some pig oil on every so often and tease apart to stop it from gong into dreadlocks. In winter i cut it a little shorter than usual, pig oil and brush, then plait and put it in a tail bag else the mud just rots it even with his hocks with awful stringy whispy bits hanging down. Done this for the last few years and hes now got a lovely tail :)
