How many of you have taken a 'punt' on a horse and did it pay off or not??

I bought a skinny sad looking boy from Ashford Market on Thursday. Only 6, ISH and well bred, apart from being in awful condition I can't find a lot wrong with him other than some old scars and knocks and he has an adorable nature, wandering around like a little lost soul. For £400 I decided to take a punt and see what will become of him with some tlc and food.

Be interested to hear others experiences, for me, the more I have spent on a horse the less successful the partnership has been!!!

I'd be phoning up the old owners (from the passport) to see how he got the scars and get some background before I tried to ride him. If you are luck he'll just be neglected.
Good luck with him, let us know how he goes.

I did many years ago with a pony. He was in terrible condition, massive windgalls on back legs, skinny, nervous. Paid next to nothing for him. Didn't ride him for a few months when we got him home as we didn't think it was fair. I lunged him just to get a bond but he didn't understand any of it. Thought o god whats gonna happen when I get on!! Any way he turned out to be completely bombproof, unbeatable in the pony clud in xc and showjumping (unfortunately he was a little lively for dressage!!) but the most wonderful pony to do anything with!! I really hope your boy turns out ok, good luck xx

The last owner was the one I bought him from at the sales so I have some info on him. He came over from ireland from Cavan in Jan but previous to that it's just the breeders details. No big scars or knocks, just some old small normal cuts and an old splint - So nothing sinister!

He is fully shod with wear on the shoes but not been ridden for 6 weeks. She had loads there for sale due to repossesion.

As I say, I haven't bought him with ideas of being a world beater, I've taken a gamble but the basics are good. He's well bred, young, good conformation and good temperament from what I can establish.....

I have a 2 year old pony that came to me full of worms and very skinny. I paid the cost of gelding for him and got delivery included so they certainly made a loss (got him from a dealer). He has been bought as a companion and is a lovely cheeky pony - so far so good! We'll see in a couple of years how he is as a ridden pony (will wait a bit longer as he is very immature for his age - going to let him be a horse for a while as I know he was ridden or driven before going to the dealer)
