I am due to go on a plane tomorrow and taking my riding hat and air jacket with me and gas canister. I have agreed with them that the gas canister is fine to take and have that printed off.

What I didn't realise until today was just "how small" the cabin bag size is nowadays! It used to be fairly generous and I've been away on a 5 day holiday with just cabin bag luggage. Now it seems they want you to put it under the seat in front of you so is more "handbag" sized

The maximum I can carry is 40 x 25 x 20 bag - not that I have a bag this size, so I am having to use one slightly bigger but not fill it to the brim! I have shoved everything I can think on inside my hat - but it's still SOOOOOO big and takes up most of the room.

I thought I might wear my air jacket under my coat and over my riding stuff. I'm wearing my boots, but taking a pair of flats with me also.

Any bright ideas of how I can pack a pair of jeans, a couple of clean t shirts, and my hat and air jacket - all inside this small area?

Are you taking luggage in the hold as well or just hand baggage?

When I did overseas trips I kept my riding hat outside my bag and security staff were OK with that - but probably depends on the airline.

Yes I could wear the hat as well I guess? I am going to look a right fool though walking round the airport with a riding hat on!

How long ago was that SEL - they seem to have really cut down now and want to catch everyone out by charging an excess baggage! Its Ryanair and I've just heard this morning on TV how much monies they are losing by offering these cheap flights lol. So they will want to make up as much as possible I suspect?

The cabin bag must fit under my seat in front of me, including the hat I suspect?

Not exactly the same but when we went skiing our ski helmets were attached to our cabin bags without issue. If they challenge it, just put it on as other posters have said. There are loads of tales of people wearing lots of layers where the bag is over weight, whether they’re apocryphal or not just brazen it out!

Attach it to your bag, if you are challenged on it, then put it on your head at that point and take it off again asap. It is likely to be only at the boarding gate that it is challenged. the rest of the airport just attach it.
They cannot stop you wearing a hat.

Great advice - thank you - that's what I will do! Easy to attach to the bag with its strap so its not a problem. And they can see what it is and put it through the scanners, and if they want me to wear it - then I will lol

I suspect everyone will realise why you are wearing the hat... Or you'll just have to pull off being eccentric.

Having travelled quite a bit lately, I've been flabbergasted at the size of 'hand' luggage some people manage to take on. Only ever seen once the bags being put into a sizer thingy. Saying that, the last couple of times I've been with BA on a short break they've made me put my small carry on in the hold as they've run out of space in the cabin 😡

DO NOT ATTACH IT TO YOUR BAG! Ryanair are barstewards and will charge you for it! They charged one guy the last time I flew with them in April for having a pac-a-mac attached to his bag which made it not fit in their silly wee box thing!

Roll up your clothes , put them in a carrier bag (plasic 5p things) and squash them right, right down as small as they will go then put a round of duct tape on each end to keep it all squisehed. You should be able to fit a weeks worth of clothes, your hat and your shoes in then not a bother.

Eta - I actually quite like Michael O'Leary!

Ryanair updated their baggage policy a few months ago - I think if you pay for priority boarding now you can take the original size cabin baggage as well as the handbag size for only a little extra. Worth checking if you're struggling?

I can't see how you'll pack a hat otherwise, I'm certain they're all going to be larger than those dimensions...

Its too late now to book another cabin bag on as I've already checked in! The only option I have is to pay £25 each way, so an extra £50 just so I can take my hat with me, if I cannot wear it or attach it to the outside of my bag!

you can wear it! attach it to your bag untill 5 mins before the gate and then pop it on your head at that point. At worst you will have to wear it until after take off!

When I flew with my skull capI took a soft rucksack, put the hat in the bottom upside down and filled it with stuff. Sat under my seat no bother.

If you have a lot to take look at using stuffsacks to compress bulky clothing. I have used drysacks and it is amazing how small you can make things.

I give up - I really give up. I have it in writing I can take my air jacket and 1 x gas cylinder on board, I did this when I booked the flights. Now they are saying the gas cylinder can only be carried if it's empty! Grrrrrrrr

Can't help with the gas canister unfortunately but you can usually take hand luggage plus a 'handbag'. Could you take a hat bag with you as your 'handbag' and pack as much as you can in and around the hat? If you go onto youtube and search for "folding clothes for packing" or similar, there are loads of videos showing you how to pack your clothes as small as possible - like how to roll your pants inside your socks and stop them unrolling etc. It's a fascinating watch if nothing else! You might find weight is the issue with the air jacket too as I think the limit now is only 10 kg split between both bags.

Ah - i never flew Ryan Air. I did wonder about the cannister. What riding are you doing that you'll need an air jacket for?

I roll clothes tightly too. Unless you are in a hotel at night then just prepare to lower your hygiene standards!! Some of the trips I went on my jods were a biohazard at the end.

Not with Ryanair, unless you pay extra for priority or a 10kg cabin bag all you are allowed is essentially a handbag that fits under the seat in front of you.

I used to fly fairly regularly back and forth between yards in Scotland and the south of England and I was able to check riding stuff in at no extra cost as 'sports equipment'. It couldn't go as hand luggage so I had to wait around to collect it but it was free. This was 15ish years ago though so it's possible you can't do this anymore.

Hat into bag but with every piece of clothing you can stuff into it lol. Wear your riding boots (and chaps if needed) and could you wear the air jacket as some sort of fancy eccentric wear?

Keep the letter you have saying that the canister is allowed on you and show to security if they ask.

TBF easy jet can be pretty strict too. It seems to be down to luck at the gate. I do remember when baggage charges first became a thing, there was a great picture in the papers of an international dressage rider wearing her top hat and riding boots through security.
Just be careful if you wear riding boots with steel shanks through the x-ray machines. My husband found out the hard way, that security do not know about riding boots.

You cant book sports gear in free of charge (anymore) and have to pay for hold luggage.

Would the air canisters not count as combustible? I wouldn't have thought they would be allowed if they weren't empty.

There's a lot of small print on here if that helps

I've heard that they are being really strict about cabin baggage too. Sorry OP 😬

I frequently fly with riding clothes. Put your hat into a carrier bag and just wear wear it when you get to the gate...put the carrier bag in your pocket. Wear the bulkiest items of clothing and shoes and just change them in airport. I’m surprised they told you the canister would be okay so no surprises they’re now saying no. Book priority with extra baggage next time!

I've not go over the problem of taking the CO2 canister unfortunately - so there is no point in taking my air jacket. I don't ride anything without an air jacket on these days, even just walking down the road on a horse I just wear it.

So I'm not sure how I'm going to feel about riding without it?

Extra baggage or another bag paid for isn't going to help me on this one, it's not so much the lack of space I'm struggling with. I can get my hat in my carry on bag with clothes wrapped and folded around it.

If I could have cancelled the flights and not gone, then I would have done rather than ride with no air jacket. I wouldn't have booked the flights if I'd not have had the written response from the person I first spoke to!

Regarding the canister, I find it easier to buy one when you get there. I've had emails saying it's ok and still been refused at the airport. I just don't bother trying to take it now.
Please send us a picture of you wearing your hat at the airport!

My last trip was to Iceland. I took my Maxpedition Fliegerduffel bag, like I usually do if travelling with only hand luggage; this bag was designed to conform to airlines' size requirements for hand luggage.

When the woman at the check-in counter saw it, she said "that's not going to fit". But there was one of those little box-like size gauges; I put the bag on top of it, and it slid into the gauge under its own weight.

Anyway... For an airline to state "the bag must fit under the seat in front of you" is nonsense. There will be overhead bin space for you, and the airline should publish dimensions of permitted hand luggage that more-or-less matched that space (allowing for variations in 'plane models). For Ryanair, this is 40 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm (according to Wikipedia), so my Fliegerduffel (56 cm x 23 cm x 36 cm)would not pass if it was fully packed...

I've often boarded a flight that was very full and seen gate staff take bigger items of hand luggage (which at the check-in counter had been judged acceptable) from passengers, to be put in the hold... You're not charged for that.

This is probably too late for OP, but I'd like to know how the flight (and trip overall) went.

They are filled with carbon dioxide, so definitely NOT combustible. But the airline might have a ban on ALL compressed gases except medical oxygen required during flight by the passenger.
