Taking a riding hat and air jacket in your cabin bag - EEEK

I've just realised that Ryanair's policy on lifejackets is a bit worrying.

It makes me think that the planes are not equipped with these for the event of ditching in the sea...

Why not get a proper body protector instead of the air jacket? You might have to wear it as it wouldn't fit in a cabin bag but would give you extra safety. No worrying about gas canisters or having the correct attachments etc. They also protect in ways an air jacket can't.

I went to Ireland hunting last year and only had hold luggage. I wore my BP and about three layers of clothing!!!! managed to get away with not much in my hold bag other than my hat and a few bits because I was mostly wearing everything!

Anyway... For an airline to state "the bag must fit under the seat in front of you" is nonsense. There will be overhead bin space for you, and the airline should publish dimensions of permitted hand luggage that more-or-less matched that space (allowing for variations in 'plane models). For Ryanair, this is 40 cm x 20 cm x 25 cm (according to Wikipedia), so my Fliegerduffel (56 cm x 23 cm x 36 cm)would not pass if it was fully packed...

.

ryanair charge separately for an overhead bag. While that might be considered nonsense it is true.

Ryan air are getting a little ridiculous now, they will be charging us to pee next!!

Like others have said I have seen people with cycle hats/ski hats clipped to their hand baggage and nothing has been said but that wasn't with RA.
Hope you manage to get everything with you some how OP!

Of course ryanair are doing their best to make money on something, as tickets are that dirt cheap. Hence encouraging people to pay for luggage by reducing what you can bring. They are pretty strict though. Ryanair are only a pain if you try to break their rules, that annoyingly seem to change all the time.

A normal bodyprotector instead sounds sensible if you can't take the gas cannister. I'm surprised it was even possible to bring a preassurised container onboard.

I'm sure they proposed toilet charges about 10 years ago, the tabloids loved it!

Could you order a gas canister to be delivered to where you are staying?
I've read of other people being given similarly conflicting advise when trying to travel with Co2 cannisters for their bikes.
