About 6 months ago when I was working at a yard I signed up to a website-hosting thingy as I was going to design a website for the yard. Long story short, I left the yard and since then have been trying to cancel the damn subscription.

The company is not letting me log into my account, not responding to my calls, emails, or stroppy letter i sent, and still taking £5 a month out of my account which I could really do without.

Has anyone got any ideas on what I can do to cancel it? I've written to my bank to try and get them to cancel the debit but no reply as yet. Anyone got legal/practical advice on what I can do next?

Sorry its OT but I really need the help!

PS. Company e-mailed me their newsletter today to say that their annual membership renewal is now automatic - yippee! that means I'm paying £5 a month indefinitely

The bank can cancel the DD, you need to instruct both them in writing and notify the company in writing. Keep copies of both and give them a couple of days from posting to do it. The bank will then cancel it.

Is it definitely a DD though, rather than a continuous authority on your credit card, if so they can be more headache to cancel as the company controls it more than the bank does.....

I've checked online with my bank and its not a direct debit... do you know how to cancel/block something that isn't?

Is the monthly debit from your a/c made by direct debit or by debiting your a/c via your bank card details? If it's by your existing card then you will need to contact your bank to cancel this card as the company will have these card details for future payments. Then your bank can issue a new card for you with a different PAN number which company won't be able to use. If payment made by Direct Debit it's easy to cancel by just giving your bank a call to instruct them to cancel this DDR mandate. Hope this helps and good luck!

A Direct Debit or Standing Order can be cancelled by you contacting your bank or building society.
It sounds as if you have given some-one your Debit Card details for a regular payment. This is guaranteed payment and the bank or building society can not cancel it. You will have to keep contacting the company. Contact your bank and ask for the address for Visa and write to them explaining the situation.

TTT just posted this "It sounds as if you have given some-one your Debit Card details for a regular payment. This is guaranteed payment and the bank or building society can not cancel it. You will have to keep contacting the company"

However you can cancel future card payment as i said in my previous post by cancelling your existing card (as this is the card details the company have to make the debit to your a/c)be it a visa card with your credit card company or debit card with your bank. Maybe a bit inconvenient while you have to wait for them to issue a new card and not have one to use, however at least you'll cancel the monthly payment!

Ziggy,
Before you cancel your card.........I said Debit card not Credit Card. They are totally different accounts. You will be able to see if the payment comes out of your current account by looking at your bank statement. If you cancel your current Debit card and order a new one, they will take still the payment out of your account. If you have used your Debit Card, you have guaranteed the payment from your current account, the payment will still come out of your account.
