Any tips on taking of horses feathers. Did my mare's on Saturday and they look like they have been hacked at. Luckily I am not competing her for a few months
Use a comb against the direction of the coat a cut the hair that pokes through with the scissors. The comb will stop the hair getting cut unevenly and looking hacked at! It takes me ages to do it this way, my boy has proper shire feathers, so i just use the clippers!
Depends if your wanting them off completely or just tidying up with clippers.
If you use clippers then go down the leg, never across etc, clip close if your wanting everything off but if your going to a show/event then make sure you do it about a month before so it has time to grow back and blends with the rest of the hair higher up the leg. Otherwise go down lightly with the clippers not against the leg, you will get a tidy look but your horse won't feel naked and you won't see the skin etc.
Takes practice really and it depends which clippers you use, but eventually you'll get the hang of it.
Did them with scissors and a comb and they still looked hacked off. I didn't want to do them with the clippers as she isn't clipped and she would just look stupid but might try going down the leg in the summer .
My advice would be to get some decent trimmers. If you have taken of most of the hair with scissors, then using the trimmers would just help to tidy up the lines. Or you could just clip it on the longest setting, as the summer coat comes though you probably wouldnt see the lines that much????
During the summer i use my clippers in the same way i do in the winter when i take everything of (against the coat) but i hold a comb in between the leg and the clippers. Its a bit fiddily but i found that going with the coat tickled my boy and made him snatch his leg up and then i ended up with hacked bits!!
How did you do them? I always use a comb and scissors it takes longer but I think it looks more natural and I can keep having a look at how much I'm taking off.
