taking photos at a racecourse...

I'm thinking of going to races soon to practise photographing the horses, just wondered if this is allowed and if I get any good photos can I sell them?

at most racecourses you are allowed to take photos but no flash, and i dont think your allowed to sell them

You should be able to take photos for your use only, flash will not be allowed for safety reasons, there usually are pros so you are not going to be able to sell unless you ask permission and probably pay to be there.
Look in the T&Cs of the racecourse for more info.

Do you think they would be ok to use for competitions then, so not selling them

I'm a keen amateur photographer too, and I think others are right in that you need to ask permission, not to take pics but to then see them on. As for entering competitions.... I enter camera club and photography forum competitions with images of all sorts of subjects including pics taken at horsey events of one kind or another. As this is not commercial use of the images I'd guess that's ok.
