Taking responsibility for your own horse

Hello - there is nothing wrong with full livery at all and its not that that I am getting at - just owners in gerneral not taking responsiblity for their horses so please dont think I am having a pop at full livery peeps as I am sometimes one myself !!!
grin.gif

Bloody hell!!! I am not on about this!!!!!!

I AM ANNOYED ABOUT PEEPS NOT TAKING RESPONSIBILTY FOR THEIR HORSES WELFARE - NOT ANYTHING TO DO WITH HOW MANY TIMES YOU GO UP ETC ....... i AM POINTING OUT THAT SOME PEOPLE ALWAYS THINK THAT THE LIVERY OPERATOR IS RESPONSIBLE NOT THEMSELVES

GOD READ THE POST!!!

I FULLY AGREE WITH FULL LIVERY TO GIVE YOUR HORSE A ROUTINE - My pont has nothing to do with what type of livery you are on - people on diy and part are just as bad .

I think it's whatever suits you. Personally I like DIY livery and I like to do as much as possible myself. I have assisted sometimes. That said, the first year I bought my horse I had full livery and the yard did pretty much everything, I really just rode and mucked out on saturdays and sundays. It suited me at the time, have just got back into the habit of doing it now (and now my lifestyle allows it).

To be honest, if half these people don't have a clue, as you put it, maybe it's better that the yard have most of the responsibility for the horse?

This seems to be going round in circles, I don't think anyone is criticising those on full livery, or those who can't see their horses every day, as they say 'before you criticise someone try walking a mile in their shoes'.

I am however interested to know what instructions were ignored by the YO, I don't think this is defammatory as you are not indicating where the yard is or who the YO is in any way.

Also you say that your friend loves the horse to pieces, in that case why does she want him put to sleep when she can't compete or afford the livery?

I am confused.

I think, to put it simply, you are responsible for your own horse.

Therefore it's YOUR responsibility to find a yard you trust if you want full or part livery. If you're working in the week, and the horse gets out and kicks someone that's YO's fault, not yours. So in essence their responsibility. But YOUR responsibility to find YO that will look after your horse properly...

No, I think full livery owners are a disgrace. I find it unacceptable that they should be unable to look after their horses themselves due to children/work/caring for relatives or whatever. I suggest full livery owners immediately give up work (and find a sugar daddy/mummy) free themselves from childcare (can you sell children on e-bay?) and push any old folk into the nearest nursing home (until euthanasia is legal, anyway).
And then you will be able to get up at 6am when it is sleeting in the winter, put on leaky wellies, slither your way to a mud soaked field to feed, hay your horses, and to clean the green slime out of the water trough.
So there.

Hi Katy-just tacking on

.
I have my own yard and will accept full liveries ONLY. I couldnt put up with people arriving at all hours of the day/night, the mess left behind, horses all being fed at dif times, the bitching/pettyness blah, blah blah.
My owners trust and pay me to look after their horses in a professional way, which I do (from A to Z). They dont need to know how many times their horse breaks wind in a day but the more important things are passed on. If they prefer something done in a different way for their ned then its done within reason at no extra charge! All of my owners are free to come as often or as little as they wish and in no way would I judge them for this. Not everyone has their pockets full of polo mints and a tear in their eye when the see 'Dobbin'-it just doesnt work that way. Not all horses are treated as the 'be all and end all' and it doesnt make the owners bad owners in any way. To be honest, Im happy that most of my owners trust me to think of everything for their horse and leave me (and said horse) in peace

ALOT of full time workers are also parents and they still DO get up at 5am to do their horses/s in ALL weathers AND return to their horse/s after work too
wink.gif

I forgot to add that-I feel morally responsible for ALL of the horses in my care just as Im legally responsible for them too (while in my care). Mairi.

That is just stupidity, we used to have a livery yard and for £1 we would turn them out in the morning. I could never understand if you took in petrol costs etc why you wouldn't do that, but some of them didn't.

Good-oh, next time I have been working from 4pm till midnight then the following morning from 2am to 5am, usually several hours away from my horse, I'll shall beat myself up about being a terrible owner for not going to see him as some people do all that and are parents too...:p

Blimey, my condition of taking my new job was that they paid me enough to keep my horse on part livery (they do everything except groom and ride) so that I have peace of mind that no matter how crazy my job gets, he is looked after.

Oh yes (not aimed at you annie) do none of you 'perfect' owners go on holiday?!

QR
LOL, I have more of a life now ( son is all grown up
grin.gif
) BUT I would never knock anyone that wants to or needs to do it themselves
smile.gif

When I did the early starts , late finishes it wasn't due to stupidity
wink.gif
it was beacause I kept them at home but when we moved I put my remaining

one in DIY livery.

I know it wasn't aimed at me , I know cos I'm not perfect at all LOL, BUT no I didn't have a 'proper' holiday for 20 years, just the odd long weekend away.

Ha, my OH would leave me if I didn't go on holiday! I actually love the fact that I can have a horse and a life outside of horses. My job is wierd (but hey, you can't count bats during the day so wierd hours are an occupational hazard!), but I enjoy it, but I also like going on holiday, not panicing if I have to work late, and living in the city. All of which mean if I want to have a horse then he has to be on part livery so that I retain my relationship and my sanity.

No!
Annie - I am shocked at your dreadful behaviour.
If you are doing your horses then....don't you think you should be TAKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN CHILDREN (new post idea there).
Or did you sell them on e-bay or into slavery as mini-grooms/poo pickers?
Either way, I think it's disgraceful

And I'm very serious

Sorry rather off topic but BATS !!!

Do you know Phil Richardson, he used to be my Chemistry teacher before he went totally batty LOL

ETS: as I said as long as the horse is conscientiously (OMG sp) cared for and the owner is truly happy then I really don't see a problem either way
smile.gif

No, Annie, I think you are viewing your children in the wrong way. You need to think of them as a business resource. They can poo-pick, groom, and generally actt as unpaid slaves...then when they're old enough, you can use them as free crash test dummies for your breaking and schooling enterprise.
Not that I approve of your horse or child care, obviously. If I had children I would be a much better mother than you. And of course, I'm a much better horse owner too.
And modest

As it happens, I do. Not desperately well, but I used to live and work in that part of the world.

I agree completely, however certain circumstances i.e:paying £90 wk for the care of your horse you would expect nothing less than a a top class service,(including gold plated name plates on doors, lol)unfortunately a lot of people just want their horses to ride with friends and be a status symbol!I for one have had my horse on full livery,i was there every day of the wk and they were never allowed to make up his feeds,my livery allowed for the fact i bought my own feed!!Livery owners need to make up legaaly binding contracts with every owner these days unfortunately, which will in time lead to a major decline in any sort of horse business!x

However, just seeing other posts, please do not be offended, lol, not aimed at people that love their neds and have kids and full time jobs as i am 1 of those, lol!!I think what annie is saying is unlike u guys there are people out there that really do not give a sh*t what their horse is getting fed or wether he is happy in the field with whoever they have turned them out with,or even that the stable staff r doin what they are supposed to be doing!I have worked on a yard before were the head girl was reported to management for abuse to livery horses,NOTHING was done as she was an idiot and would work for 3p an hr,liveries knew nothing about the abuse to their horses,DISGUSTED i left!!x

couldnt agree more.... what bugs me the most is some peoples attitudes of "my horse/pony is broken lets put it to sleep"... they are not robots.

There are some idiots out there there obviously dont give 2 craps of the welfare of their horses.... rah
mad.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

And exactly what do you mean by that? That horse's who are 'broken' should be dumped in a field for the rest of their lives, and left to suffer? What an appallingly ignorant statement. I was, until yesterday, making exactly that decision with my beloved pony, who was pronounced chronically lame by a vet. He is a bit of a psycho, was bored to tears not being worked, and we decided the best thing was to put him to sleep after the summer. The KINDEST thing to do in my opinion. God its statements like that that make me want to throw in the towel on this whole equine lark. What pure ignorance.
mad.gif

For your information, my pony is on DIY grass livery. He is seen and fed every day by myself. And I am quite aware he is not a robot.

When I lived in the UK, I rented land and stables of my own and kept my horses myself.
Here in Argentina, the only livery available anywhere is full, everything included. However, I LIKE to tack up myself. I NEED to know, for my own peace of mind, what and how much PF is fed. I check to make sure she's been properly mucked out and that her water is fresh. I clean my own tack.
The only thing I can do without is mucking out
grin.gif
although I'll do that too if the grooms are busy. There are only 1 or 2 people I'd trust to look after PF if I had to go away for any length of time, but those people I trust completely.
This is a very long way of saying that even though I HAVE full livery, I don't actually use it. Nice to have it there though.

OK so where does ignoring special requests for care that result in making the animal poorly make the owner totally responsible? The YO agreed to the special requests and ignored or failed to carry them out who is responsible?

[/ QUOTE ]

Turnover you never said in your first post that the YO was under instructions
