I am going to South Africa in a few weeks, has anybody taken their riding hat on a plane? I was hoping to strap it to my hand luggage rucksack but not sure if I would be allowed to?

Any recommendations for must have equipment for safari riding ? :)

No riding holiday but pony shopping I took it in my hand luggage. For proper holiday I popped it in my suitcase as I had the space! Not a safari though I'm afraid :p

When I need to travel with the helmet, I wear the helmet for embarkation and disembarkation at the aircraft.
Additionally if circumstances are such that the crew has failed to achieve a safe landing at the conclusion of the first approach to land, I wear the helmet (securely fastened) and check my seat safety strap fastened for the next attempt to land.

Yes Sir!
............. assume the brace position for every landing, always drink very little so you are not in the loo when you hit turbulence, and make sure you pay extra to sit at the emergency exit, you can't rely on anyone else to cope with those kranky doors.
PS I usually stuff my helmet with my undies, I don't bother wearing it just for take off....

Sudocream, and maybe bicycle shorts which are worn commando style. There are special cotton riding undergarments, I'd take half a dozen, and some medicated talc, which may have to be purchased after security.
A pair of light leather gloves SSG, and a real silk scarf, some good cotton T shirts and socks. Rohan do good clothing.
I wear my red patent leather joddie boots when travelling in jeans, they have proved a godsend.

ah....from my safety seat right by that emergency exit and safety helmet at hand.....I will keep an eye open for a pair of red patent leather joddie boots trotting down the aisle........

Ok, I will wear my red silk scarf, and carry Horse&Hound under my left arm, so there will be no mistake!

When I went to South Africa last year I took my hat in my hand luggage as the year before in Croatia one of the girls luggage didn't arrive until a couple of days after her so I was a bit nervous of that happening to me!

As for safari holiday must haves, I just wore jodhpurs, loose fitting tshirts, short boots and chaps last year, although I went in June when it is cooler than it is now. The main thing you will want is a camera, I mainly used my phone when out riding for ease but if you can get a go pro or similar do that, I've got myself one for when I go back this year as you just can't capture everything by taking photos. I've also seen some incredible rain videos from where I stayed last year on Facebook in the last couple of weeks so probably take a good waterproof too, although hopefully you won't get too much rain!

Where about in South Africa are you going OP?

I used to wear jod boots and take basic riding clothes (chaos, 1 pair jods) in hand luggage. Hat was clipped by chin strap to bag and I never had an airline complain.

Sunglasses you don't mind getting trashed with one of those string things to keep them round your neck are v good. Bumbag. Some sort of scarf to keep sun off neck. eyedrops. High factor sun lotion (ski stuff doesn't sweat off). Wet wipes. Little bottle hand disinfectant. Comfy pants. Bag for dirty washing (mine was vile after every riding safari!). Gloves. Hairbands. Swim gear. Anti histamine. Immodium.

Where are you off to?

You might scare the other passengers if you wear it on the plane :p

I just packed mine in my hold luggage stuffing it with socks/undies and putting it in the middle of the bag. Traveled fine :)

I put mine in hand luggage well padded with socks and nightwear. I wore my riding boots and put jods (and chaps?) also in the hand luggage so I had it in case suitcase went missing I could ride. I didn't like the thought of it in a suitcase being chucked a round and with a pile of heavy cases on top.

I wore 2 pairs of pants for riding, the outer ones the padded dressage pants! Some people take their own seat saver, after experiencing less than comfy saddles.

Hat in my hand luggage, stuffed with knickers, socks & any othr essentials in case hold bag doesn't arrive.
As for essentials, full chaps & tops you don't mind getting ripped - if your safari is at wait a little these are essential, Philips favourite pass time is " Bush whacking" - basically cantering flat out down narrow twisty tracks with thorny bushes each side, couple of my tops didn't survive the experience 😀

Great thank you everyone, super helpful ! I was worried about putting it in hold luggage because of rough handling and changes in pressure etc.

I am going to Hoedspruit :)

I've flown with full hunting kit in hand luggage, including hat/whip/boots. Got a few funny looks, but the airline had no issue with it. I don't think they mind what you carry on, as long as it's not against the rules/regulations/size limits.

When i go riding abroad i always pack my hat in my hand luggage(along with my riding boots and a set of riding stuff). Its not getting thrown about and at least if my luggage goes awol i can still ride

I went with unicorn trails and did their istria land & sea ride which wasn't far from Pula. Croatia is a beautiful country, I loved it! Have an amazing time! Oh and make sure you take insect repellent, I didn't get bitten all week then forgot to put it on the last day and got eaten alive!

Definitely put your hand in your hand luggage - I sell riding holidays for a living so go on a lot myself and always do that. I also clean my riding boots and wear them on the plane as that saves a load of room in your luggage too. I'll PM you my packing list suggestions (won't link on here as I think it would count as advertising).

Hope you have a super time!
