Before I had my horse he had always lived out naked unless he was clipped. As he has not had alot of grass in his field with no shelter I have rugged him this winter. He is in a medium weight but very warm.

I had to move fields as the fencing has become dangerous so he is back in his summer field until I move yards at the end of jan. there is barbed wire in the field and he keeps getting attached to the fence. I could run electic fencing round but it seems pointless and expensive for just a month.

What I was thinking was to take his rug off (he is not clipped) and feed extra hay. This field has a shelter so he can get out if the rain. If I saw him freezing then obviously I would rug him. i am worried about him ripping the fence up as it is not secure at all :(

What would you do?

Electrify if this is your summer field as that fencing doesn't sound good and you'll use it again in the summer so not just for one month.

Far better to spend some money rather than your horse getting caught in barbed wire as you say he keeps on getting caught in it with his rug on......

Sounds like he could cope without a rug but,
I hate barbed wire but if you don't want to buy electric fencing for a month then yes taking rug off us an option.
But remember he could get hurt.
Instead if the rug getting cought and ripped It could be his skin.

You could buy the electric fence ass kit and sell it when you move, people are always looking for a it.
You would still get a decent price.

Or borrow or buy second hand yourself.

Difficult one...sounds like he doesn't need the rug, but he's already had it on so I would be inclined to leave it on now till the spring (but I'm a bit of a soft touch) and electic fence as sounds like its a bit dodgy?

Thanks guys. I will put up what electric fencing I have for now and pick some more up at the weekend.

Bahumbug - I am leaving the yard at the end of jan so will be taking all my fencing with me and won't be using the field again.

You don't realise how important fencing is until your somewhere that is just awful!

I would but its quite a small field and I don't want them trashing it if they are just stuck in one bit. I suppose a few more posts won't be that expensive and hopefully I will have enough tape :)
