Sophie had a little lump removed (stifle area), and three stitches.

The area looked really nice, with a thin dry scab, so I nicked the stitches out on day 12.

BIG MISTAKE - the wound had completely opened again in a couple of hours, so now going to have to let it heal itself from the inside out (vet was out this morning).

Not sure whats gone wrong really - I thinght 12 days was more than enough time.

Has anyone left stitches for much longer before taking them out?????

My boy had a similar op with 5-6 stitches. Should of been left in for 3 weeks. However he had a different idea and took them out within the week. We too have had to let it heal from the inside out.
Given the chance I would of left the stitches in for the 3 weeks like my vet said.

Oh no - I feel even worse now.

My vet definitely didn't say leave them in for three weeks.

I'm thinking though mabe such a long time because it was full thickness through the skin.

Feeling incredibly guilty

It was a sizeable lump that he removed, On that bit of loose skin in front of the stifle so the stitches needed to stay in longer. The incision was about 3 inches long . The scabby bit left is about the width of a golf ball but it is healing well. Don't feel guilty! Hindsight is a wonderful thing. With hindsight I would of had the offending lump removed earlier before it had started to grow bigger. But you know how it goes, the well meant advice from people who have had horses forever. ''He's a baby it's juvenile warts - they will drop off''
Yeah right

If ever you've had surgery that leaves a long scar, the nurses take every other stitch out first, then leave it for a day or so before taking the rest out. That way, if the wound isn't properly healed, you haven't got a disaster before you take all the stitches out.

My C sec scars.... both times had all stitches out at once after only 6 days!!! 17 (staples) of the buggers the first time and one long running stitch the second.

I was terrified that my whole stomach was going to drop out.

S's incision was only about 1" long, so hopefully it won't take too long to heal over. Was in exactly the same place as your boys though.

Looking a lot better this morning, its not too sore to touch, and she's perfectly sound. Just hope the weather doesn't get too warm, as we haven't any flies at the moment and I would like it to stay that way.

We have a diagnosis now - it was a fibro-papilloma. Seemingly it doesn't spread and is quite benign so glad I made the decision to get rid.

That makes a lot of sense BoF. Sophie only had three stitches, so no scope for that this time.

I will remember for next time though.

Thanks

Oh blimey MQ, bet you didn't cough or sneeze for a week! I had surgery on my thyroid and they took out every other stitch. Ha ha, even then I still looked like I had bumped into Jack the Ripper! Went home with a humungus slash across my throat and the postman almost passed out on the doorstep.
