Taking two horses to Nottingham uni

Really want to study veterinary next year and bring my two girls with me. Anyone know what the livery is like. Missy weaves and box walks so ideally she should be out 24/7 or in a barn. Anyone know if anyone has ever been able to do this? Also are you able to get involved in comps and lessons on your own horses or does it have to be on the unis horses? Also I know it’s hard enough getting a space for one, how easy would it be to get two in!? (I mean 1 1/2 as penny is only 11hh bless!)
If not does anyone know any livery’s in walking/ cycling distance from the SB campus? And if they have arenas, comps, lessons, 24/7 turnout etc)
Any info at all greatly appreciated
 
I’m studying MSc Veterinary Physiotherapy there. They have 16 stables on a first come, first served basis. The stables are just regular stables, nothing special but well maintained in two courtyard areas. They have an indoor school and I believe turnout is 24/7 in summer and decent hours in winter. Their website says prices from £32 per week depending on season:

We do use the horses for practicals but I believe the owners get paid for their time? Not 100% sure though! I think they have a clause in the contract that they have to be available to be used in practicals. Again, not 100% sure! Best thing would be to ring them and ask.

Thank you, do you know if many people keep their horses at the nearby livery yards or do people find the driving too time consuming? Also do you know if you have to bring them in at night or can it be in the day. I feel like you get more hours if they are out at night!
 
Sorry, that’s pretty much the extent of my knowledge! When we do practicals in the winter that finish at 4-4.30ish the horses are all being brought in from the fields- I guess some may have been left out but they all seem to come in at around that time.
Try posting on a Campus Facebook group or email student services.
 
Words of caution. My son’s former GF is doing vet med at Nottingham, she is not horsey but the course is ‘all consuming’. If you want livery, it would need to be full. He has also house shared with human med students, and in his experience the vet course is even more demanding than that re placements etc. taking over your life.

I was going to say similar to Tiddlypom. The course is very demanding and the placements can be far away with long and unsociable hours.
You will have to ask them yourself with regards to horses in/out but I would imagine they have to be fairly strict with rules being the same for all otherwise people get upset! They seem to have a good amount of grazing with post and rail fencing but the soil up there is heavy and can get easily waterlogged.

Good luck though! I would suggest calling/emailing them before setting your heart on anything!
 
I graduated in 2016 but had my horse there for 2 years of my course. One was on a local livery Yard and one at the vet school itself. You’re probably unlikely to get 2 stables at the vet school and they have to come in at night during the winter. They are used in practicals for the students and then the physio course practicals are optional and you did used to get paid for them. You can take them to the local riding school for comps and lessons with the riding club if you want to but for the uni team you have to train and compete on the riding school horses. There are a few other yards in the area that are accessible particularly if you have a car. I was on one at Barton which had various livery options but again they did come in at night in winter. as people have said you need to consider holidays and placements but there’s usually plenty of people on the campus that have had to leave ponies at home and keen to help out if needed!

Are there many people that choose livery options rather than keeping their horses at the uni as I know there’s limited space. Annoying about not being able to compete for the uni on your own horse, is this the same even for those who keep their horses at sb

Also do you know which riding school it is that you can have lessons and do comps at ?

there was a few in my year that kept horses elsewhere. It’s just the bucs teams that you can’t use your own horses so it’s a fair playing field for everyone. The friendly riding club comps You can take your own horse if you want to. The sb riding club uses long lane as it’s riding school
 
Ive been to see one of my previous horses who was there with his new owner and i loved the place, he was on full livery and was very well cared for. I think it will be hard to have two with you but if you can afford full livery but then the other option is not to take them, which would mean you would see them even less. If it was me and I had the money, i would take them, it will give you good downtime from your studies.

Ok that is good news. Do many people do this. I think as ling as it’s hackabke from where ever I choose to keep them then that sounds like the way forwards. Thank you for all you help!

far far less intensive course and i live at home & commute, but i bought 2 horses in my final year, both of which went lame and have needed an awful lot of rehab, and it’s doable!

i have to go 2x a day and also work nearly full time hours doing shift work, don’t get me wrong sometimes i wish they were on full livery but personally i think they’re the best downtime you could think of!

i’d definitely factor in having to put them on full livery at one point or another🤣

This . My daughter studied veterinary and no way would she have had time to have her horse there. It was a very full on course and she had very little spare time .

I have no experience from the student perspective, but did have a livery who took her horse to Uni (Agricultural College, I cannot recall what she was studying but it wasn't a vet course) and it was back with me by Christmas.
 
I did Biology at uni 10 years ago. A full on course but I would guess not nearly as full on as vet med. I put Kenny on full livery back where he was on livery at home and found a sharer who kept him ticking over. I missed him like crazy and went home every few weeks to see him but ultimately it was absolutely the right thing to do, there is no way I would have had time to give both aspects the attention that they needed if he was at uni with me. (As an aside: I joined the equestrian society to feed the cravings and it was the most fun I have ever had. Go to compete, ride some great horses and made lifelong friends)
 
I have a part-loan at university twice a week and that is a big commitment once you include uni work, extra-curriculars, and just general friends. It's doable because I can't imagine my life without horses and I've fallen a bit in love with part-loan pony but is an extreme toll on your time (and funds). This is doubly true for an intensive course like veterinary.

I'd weigh up all the pros and cons and try your first year without the horses there to settle and see how they might fit into your life at university.

I took my horse to uni for the last two years of vet school (I was in Liverpool so it was when we moved out to the Wirral, my mum had him for the first three years). I don't think I could have done it whilst in the city due to the travelling times out of the city to a livery yard, but on the Wirral it was easy enough - my yard was 5 mins from Leahurst, and by then I'd done all the partying/uni-life stuff so wasn't feeling like I was missing out on much by playing ponies instead.

He was on DIY livery but my yard owner was fab so would bring him in for me if I wasn't there by the time hers came in in winter.
