Just had a call from the vet, the faecal sample has shown the presence of giardia in Talisker's gut which - surprise surprise - causes diarrhoea!

He has recommended that we treat with Panacur over a number of days, and as it can be infectious to other dogs I am going to treat Islay as well even though she is not showing any symptoms.

He cannot rule out the presence of campylophactor (got to check the spelling of that one

) as the culture can take up to 3 weeks to grow that, if he DOES have that then we can treat it with different antibiotics over a period of time.

So here's hoping it is just the giardia, I am just pleased we have found something and can start treating Talisker tonight

Thanks for the warning and congratulations,

well not to that he's ill of course, without that they found something and it's treatable.

By the way, Pro-kolin should only be used for a few days in a row, but Pro-Soluble is the same probiotic supplement, but without the kaolin clay, so Pro-Soluble can be given for around ten days or more, according to my vet.

from Sweden.

Thanks FinnishLappund

I am just so relieved that we have found something tangible this time, which can be treated and sorted relatively easily

Actually it makes me wonder whether Jura had the same thing, as she never had a faecal test done

Ah well, too late now so no use wondering about that

And thanks so much for the info about Pro-Kolin, I have only ever used it for about 3 days at a time so phew! I'm OK

But I'll look into getting some Pro-Soluble to have in, just in case

And now I am going to look at that smileys website, I havent got around to it yet and yours are loads better than the ones on here

Ah giardia are treatable! (they were in my last module last year!) your pup will be fine! so long as u treat all of them wit hthe wormer to prevent or treat any infection!
YEY that you have a result!
And I agree finnishlaphund has wicked smileys! :-(

Thanks LN - my sister has just phoned me, she said that gardia is fairly common - she is the director of a well-known dog charity and they had an outbreak at their kennels, dosed them all with Panacur and they were fine

Whoops, I have found the smiley website

Hmmm - well, the sofa also had a dose of Panacur tonight when Islay spat hers out

I should think that when Tal is fixed he will be happy to see Yellow Dog again - we'll have to be careful though, the ducks/chickens/cats/other dogs/sheep are never glad to see Talisker

Thanks Star, I am so pleased that the tests showed something we can work on - as I have said, I was dreading it being Jura all over again

Once Talisker is sorted I will put him on an all-in-one for sensitive stomachs, probably JWB or Burns, as the greyhound people have suggested to me that IBS/colitis is quite common for greyhounds/lurchers in their older years.

Many, many thanks for your advice on this I really appreciate it
