C's Dad has been riding Layla for her and today was hacking out when for some reason she stumbled and fell on her knees.
The damage is extensive and to the bone..
We are currently awaiting the vet after having cleaned them and put nappies over them.
It looks pretty serious I'm afraid and will take a long time to heal.
P's never had a horse fall on the road in his life and he was pitched off over her head, unhurt luckily.
The worst scenario is if they heal badly she will end up a brood mare here, and as I have pointed out to CCj, although two of her horses are off we have a load of youngsters in the field so she will have to make a start on one of them, other people aren't so lucky to have back ups..
Horses are great levellers though aren't they, one minute you're on top of the world, the next right at the bottom...
cross your fingers for Layla, there isn't a sweeter mare alive...

Ach!! What a shame HH. I really hope there is no lasting damage done and that Layla makes a good recovery.

Oh lord how awful for all concerned.

Fingers crossed that poor Layla's damage looks worse than it actually is.

I had a horse come down on the road with me (i was hacking out a friends horse in walk). It looked messy but luckily no bone damage though!
Fingers crossed for you - get well soon Layla!

Fingers and toes crossed for Layla. My friends 26 yr old cob did the same thing - both knees to the bone . She spent a week in the equine hospital so they could keep an eye on her and came home to 4 weeks box rest. She is as good as new now ( 8 months on ) and still loves going out on long hacks . Sending get better soon thoughts to Layla .....

OH no!!! I hope everything works out.

Poor girl, have got fingers crossed for her to make a full recovery.

My old mare did this, also to the bone (thankfully missing anything vital) and it took a long time to heal, but it was amazing how well it closed up. I became an expert knee bandager that summer.
Mine was ok hacking afterwards, and doing flat work. However she did struggle to jump - I think the landing was too jarring for her.

Poor Layla, fingers crossed for you HH

My old trainer never used to let any of the horses out of the yard without leather knee boots on, I always HATED them until one day a horse I was exercising tripped and slid on his knees - he skidded so hard it made a hole in the boot, all I could think of was that would have been his knees!!

Fiddly, horrible things but they have their uses

Well thats the 3rd bad thing to happen today.

Bertie many years ago went down on concrete with me but took the tops off his hocks.
That was deep and not very nice. Back then 1991 didnt really konw much as we'd only had him 2 wks.

Loads of cold hosing and prob some basic first aid cream sorted him out. Fur grew back and no problems.

Bally was always (when she was a baby) throwing herself on the ground when she freqently pissed off back to the field without me.
Her knees (ask her owner RLF) are thicker, but vet passed her on teh vetting. No scars and she too went to the bone when she went through the back of my lorry.

Plenty of aloe internal and external and loads of hosing.....

And even more luck...

Sheesh, my trainers nice 4 year old (who is now intermediate) went down on the road with me too, after then i wore knee boots for a long time after.

Huge hugs - what a horrible accident.

One of the horses on our yard did this a month or so back but only really damaged one knee and it was on a flat straight road, just fell over!!

She was on box rest for few weeks with the bandage being changed daily etc...she is all better now with not much scaring but one thing - we all make sure the horses have knee boots on now, not chancing it again!!

Oh now sounds terribly serious, I hope the vet can make prospects seem a bit brighter. As you say horses are great levellers, thing is though it was a freak accident and just one of those things.

I'm really sorry to read this bad news, hope Layla makes a good recovery, what bad luck for you.

Oh no Sue, what awful luck.

I really feel for you. Patches used to trip alot and it was always my worse nightmare to think she could land her knees. Thankfully, she never has. She's always hacked in knee boots though, but I only do this because she has a history of big stumbles on the road. Easy to think of these things in hindsight sadly. Rarely meet anyone hacking with knee boots around these parts though.

I have everything crossed that she makes a full and swift recovery. She's been going so well. Hugs to P too, I have a feeling he'll be feeling rather stiff in the morning.

Oh thats awful - fingers crossed for you all.

My showjumper went down on concrete at a show and cut his knees to the bone. I thought it was curtains for him, but they healed up eventually and he was back in full work within a few months - the tendon sheath was intact and no infection set in. After the initial antibiotics we used honey to keep the wounds moist and clean, and lots and lots of hand walking. It worked, and the scarring was minimal. We also had an emollient creme from the vets but the honey was much better. The wounds looked appalling about a week after it happened, and it was a very frustrating healing time, but once the ulcerating stopped they actually healed up well.

Good luck.

Well Vet's been and CCj will post some pics later on gallery, one knee is much worse than the other, but what I thought was bone is apparently the top of the tendon (is that better or worse I ask myself?)
The vet reckons she should eventually be ok but it's watch and wait time until Monday when he comes back. He has dressed it for now but after that it's my honey and cod liver oil dressings, they are so good at keeping wounds like this healing, and hopefully they and the anti biotics will do their work.
She is on several injections a day plus bute, and is out, we all discussed it and felt she needs to walk round for it to stay mobile, so it will sta as it is unti Monday now.
Whilst he was here he looked at Jonty, and reckoned she was healing well, her stitches are now out and she is about to start the dressings too.
Just to mkae three, Diamond was lame yesterday from we think a bruised sole...
So three out of our event horses injured, can you believe that?
Diamond will get sound over a few days I think and is on the road towards getting fit enough to event.
It will give us some time to concentrate on the baby horses, two of which are in the process of starting work at the moment. One is virtually ready to back and will go off to the backer's yard this week if they can find space, and the other starts work tomorrow.
We don't have anyone to do that first backing at the moment, our dishy belgian never got back in contact, my OH says he is too old and breaks easily and CCJ can't risk being hurt..
I think with horses you have to pick yourself up, grit those teeth and carry on; if you don't you may as well give up and take up something less soul destroying.
It's character building if nothing else when things go wrong, and typically yesterday the mare went beautifully and we thought about entering her at Bicton ODE (Un aff)
It was a freak accident, my husband is so upset but we saw he over reach in the field when she went out earlier, so probably that's what happened, she trod on herslef and fell over!
I have already been to the locl saddlers for some knee boots, our last pair wore out, and I can't seem to get any the same. They were black plastic with a velcro fastening, light and never slipped about.
Thanks for all the good wishes, you will see from the pics, the knees are a mess...
