Mine is a beagle hound mix. They are pack dogs and dont love being alone, mine is happy with human or dog company and ok alone for short periods but unhappy left alone.
Mine is basically a working bred hound from Ireland, very nose driven and very inclined to chase things that run.
However she was fine with my cats who didnt run, is the most lovely loving gentle dog you could meet, she is everyone's friend - barring real 100% dog aggressive dogs everything likes her, and she is smart enough to avoid those who might be trouble. She does do her own thing on walks, but she stays out of trouble and comes back to find me.
Trick training and lead walking was really easy to teach as shes very food driven. Equally my kitchen door has a lock on it as she can tip up the bin and open my freezer - one memorable incident when she raided the freezer, ate most of the contents and hid an entire frozen chicken in her bed for later springs to mind.
I cant say shes been the easiest dog but shes gentle and kind, fab with kids and people generally and I wouldnt change her for the world
In no expert on the breed at all but I can tell you about ours
We had him when he was 10 months old, I've never had a hound before, always had collie or lab types
He's now 7 years old, first dog I've ever had that I can't let off lead out, very scent driven, eats anything, especially out on a walk
Can be left on his own for a few hours, but we do have another (not beagle) dog so not totally on his own
But he is brilliant fun, we've recently started man trailing, absolutely playing to his strengths, we've also done scent work, obedience, rally, hoopers & HTM
He's easy to train as very food driven, but also very wilful, especially out on walks when you don't go the way he wants to go, he puts on the brakes and gives you a dirty look until you go the way he wants to go
Never a dull moment with a beagle ?
trectastics post sums them up..
Beagles are pack dogs, brilliant in families, high energy,a will of their own when offlead...they will follow the scent,it’s who they are.
As Roxy said, they are gentle and kind...ive never met a beagle you could not trust, apart from leaving an unattended sandwich LOL
In the situation you describe..I’d look at the companion breeds...a smallpoodle, bichon, shitztsu etc..would make a wonderful companion for the child and have less demanding exercise needs. However all three breeds mentioned would need daily grooming and fullgroom( clips etc) on a regular basis.
Our beagle is amazing, quite content to be left on the sofa all day, is walked off lead 90% of the time (only time he is on a lead is when we are on roads), wonderful with kids.
Mine gets 2 walks a day but would be fine with one.
you do have to keep them mentally stimulated but otherwise they are lovely dogs
