I was just scratching Ottto's tummy when I noticed a tick on the inside of his back leg.
Jumped up and got the Tick Hook and some kitchen towel, got Otto to stay still and set about removing the tick....

....Only to discover it was actually a Sticky Bud

So I'm still waiting for his first Tick to make it's appearance

ROFL, I did just the same a few weeks ago but have now got quite good at telling the difference

Although fingers crossed his tick collar really does seem to work - I haven't found one for absolutely ages! LOTS of sticky buds though

I think that was what Otto was thinking too

At least I didn't try and remove his nipple

Yes, I gave one of Henry's doobs (dog-boobs) a good tweak once to check and he looked very affronted

I can't believe Otto hasn't had any on him yet, we live on a farm with a big herd of sheep, he is walked in the Forest which is full of deer and sheep and the last time he stayed at my Parent's, their dogs got them but he didn't! Obviously his blood tastes nasty!

Haha!

I have been very fortunate with my two as well. Old girl will be 9 next month Q is 3 & touches wood they have both never had ticks. Again we are surrounded my sheep & deer.
I do feed them apple cider vinegar which I am sure makes them taste nasty!

Yuck spoke too soon - have just had to remove a tick from Henry's nose. Eeewwww they are just the most vile creatures in existance!

Still when you consider the number of deer we have around here we're not doing badly, this is the first one in months!

You should have seen me a few months ago armed with tweezers, a box of matches and a bottle of Canadian Club whisky trying to remove one from right between Bella's eyes.

Knocked the bottle over and the poor wee thing ended up smelling like a right lush, I'm surprised she didn't go up like a light!!!
Oh and me sticking a match into the tick, yelling 'just bloody DIE!!!!'

Cripes - we have an abundance of ticks - blasted things!

The dogs seem to always have at least one on them despite me pulling off hundreds!!

Yes, I use Advantix (seems to last longer than Frontline) but we are inundated with them on the moors here.

Hannah&Hen - tell me about your tick collar.

Moors always seem to be the worst place for them. Our dogs would come back from Scotland covered in them, no matter what we did!
I had one crawling up my next once

makes my skin crawl just thinking about them!

My Mum uses Frontline Combo which she thinks does the job, better than just Frontline anyway, but I don't think she has tried Advantix.

From what I can gather Advantix does last longer than Frontline with ticks as opposed to fleas. The trouble is my dogs swim regularly and therefore that reduces the effect of both.

Have to say though, I always go for Advantix over Frontline

It's a Scalibor, got it from the vets for about £17 so not the cheapest. You have to take it off when they swim (which I didn't find out until FL and others on here told me

) as it poisons fishies and other aquatic beasties but other than that it just stays on and lasts about 3 months I'm told.

Ticks are *bleurgh* so I reckon it's worth £17 to reduce the number I hvae to deal with...

Stella has had half a dozen ticks take up residence over the years. Luckily she has short hair, so they're not hard to spot. We have a tick remover--much easier to use than tweezers--and we check her over multiple times when we're on our hols. We use a herbal tick collar and natural sprays only, as the chemical repellants make Stella all lumpy and bumpy.

Are ticks such a great concern in the UK? You don't have Lyme Disease over there, do you?

It's more of a risk in some areas I think, such as near to where I live but it's still not a huge risk as far as I know. I just think they're manky

Indeed they are manky. My husband takes grave offence to anyone or anything harming his precious Stella, and usually beheads ticks once he's removed them.

I know two or three dogs who contracted Lyme last summer, one being Stella's best bud. It didn't seem too bad--antibiotics, rest etc.--but I know it can be fatal. Apparently lameness in the front legs is one of the first signs. Because Stella is only on herbal supplements, we stick to the beach and sprayed areas only in summer.

Has anyone ever used the Lyme vaccine on their dog?

Lymes is quite prevalent here due the number of deer, infact one poor man died of it a couple of years ago, I also know of two horses that have contracted it as well

So both vets and doctors are quite on the ball

I didn't know there was a Lymes vaccine?
