I’ve got a 700kg ID and am toying with the idea of a new car (2nd hand, not new) and trailer. I currently have a fiat 500 😂
My husband used to have an IX35 which wouldn’t be enough but I liked it so I thinking of a Santa Fe, a manual as it can tow 2.5T.

I have a 500 kg horse and Ifor 505, and the Tiguan was top of the list in the end as it can tow 2.3t, is not a monstrous size and still reasonably economical for use as an everyday car.

We were buying second hand too, end ended up with a Volvo XC60 instead: it also pulls 2.3 and does the job well but is a bigger car and a little less economical with fuel.

It pulls up hills fine with one horse, but I would not want to pull two unless on flat tarmac.

ETA automatic and glad we did: does make it much easier.
ETA again: the other downside of a Volvo is that they are more expensive to buy than Tiguan second hand.

Bought the fairly new Mazda CX-60, quite happy with that so far. It's a hybrid with towing mode, so I can go to and from work fully electric, and tow with the engine. I had a GLC for years before that - super expensive in diesel, but tows well. I know a few people with the Tiguan, who've had it running for years, and seem happy with that. I wouldn't buy other than 4x4 or AWD, I've seen too many people needing to get the horses out of the trailer to get out of a grassy field, while I'm just rolling out. I can tow two warmbloods in my ifor HBX511.

Three friends tow with XC60's and really like them, no problems. I think I'd go for one once my car dies.

Looking at what you all have for towing and MPG or KPL makes me want to sob. Around here people use big, honkin' trucks or SUVs.
My neighbor does have a Ford 150 that he's had for years. He drives it a lot and pulls a utility trailer with a riding lawn mower on it weekly. Last summer he used the same arrangement to drive from central VA to somewhere in Pennsylvania every couple of weeks.
This is a long, drawn out way of saying I'm jealous of your gas mileage and Fords overseas must stink. In the USA they have a good reputation.

Can you please send me details? Hubby's disco sport is currently in the garage with suspected timing belt issue, but they have said now it could be the engine :(

I sold my 09 reg Santa Fe I loved for towing and now have a Skoda Karoq which I am very happy with. It is a diesel 2l 4x4 and tows really well. It is much more economical too.
