I fantasise about having a tropical fish tank. OH is against it due to past trauma of cleaning one. I've watched lots of videos on natural tanks with lots of plants etc that don't need much cleaning, but less pretty. Can someone tell me about caring for their tropical fish tank? Either with or without a more natural feel! I don't want to get one, find it too hard and be told 'told you so!' 😂

Set up and cycled correctly with the correct plant to fish ratio it is super easy. I haven’t had to clean my tank of algae in many months maybe years and I clean the bottom (and top up the water) about once a month. I have a heavy planted tank with guppies and tetras so not massive bioload fish, but fun to watch anyway.

Setting one up takes time to get the water quality right, but then i agree with @Equi monthly clean, or filter clean depending on amount of fish.

(I know of one that is all set up, 4ft tank but not too wide, a bit shabby cabinet but complete with fish - that needs a new home ;) )

It takes time and knowledge with tropical fish my Dad kept them at home for years but he had a massive tank with a big filter, he also knew about how to keep them and they were lovely I grew up with them but I must admit I would have no idea how to go about it.

We always had a day out at wildwoods garden and fish centre in Enfield when we were kids to buy new fish with him.

I've always liked the idea of sea horses but they are incredibly difficult to keep apparently so decided not too.

Oh I agree, seahorses are my absolute favourite but sadly too much maintenance required! In fact, so many lovely fish to admire in the aquatic shops but most less simple to keep.

Once a month sounds reasonable. I've been doing lots of research. So many green tanks complete with fish for sale it made me wonder.
